There was/is a used one on the forum here for $500, but I have no idea if thats indicative of the going rate.
they are 699$ new from Musicians Friend, but Ive had several bad experiences w/ MF. |

I paid $835 (ouch!) for a new one last year at our local music store (not Guitar Center). This particular store is not known for its bargains. But....they just don't carry this kind of thing in normal music stores, even in Denver. Its a rare thing, you know. I'd have given my eye teeth to have had some kind of choice.

Bob,
I would say, grab it! A friend of mine just bought a used Emmons student model w/ 3 & 2 for $400. I've always thought that the "Starter" was a great guitar to begin with. I wouldn't be afraid to use one on a show.

Yeah the going rate for used ones is about $500, so that's a good deal at $400. Go for it. Quick. |

$500 is what I think of as the "going rate", but you might have to sit on it a while if you're only looking to turn a profit. I buy and sell fountain pens as a semi-lucrative little hobby, and I've found that the period just before and after Christmas is a great time to buy stuff, and a bad time to sell unless you're targeting a specific market.
Around about mid-February or March, when people are recovering from their Christmas excesses and tax returns start dribbling in, you could almost certainly turn it over for $500. If I were strictly trying to maximize profit from $400 I would be more inclined to go afters some PODs or Tube Screamers on Ebay - $100 profit on a $400 investment isn't all that hot. But, if you consider that you get to PLAY with the toy while you're waiting for the market to turn, and you almost certainly can't LOSE money on the deal, why not? |

You guys and gals sure are lucky!
Here in Oslo the Carter Starter (new) lists at 11.000,- Norwegian kroner (That's $1700!) I had one for a while and sold it locally for $1150..

Looks like you didn't get a bad deal after all, Leila.
Just think, it only has your fingerprints on it. And maybe Bud Carter's. |

not to mention you may still be able to get it a little lower than the asking price, I would make a lower offer , if he refuses it's still yours at $400 |

Frode, at that price, you should fly over here for a nice vacation, buy one for $699 and fly home with it. You'd still have money left over in your pocket! |

Bob,
I think I posted this before in a different post but however.......In Jan 2004, I was quoted AUS$1750 as the price for a Carter Starter retail in Sydney. Current exchange rate about AUS$1 to US$0.75. Go figure. if you know any one in Australia and want to sell at a profit.............. |
