During the 1980s I bought two different steels from Bobbe. My wife and 10 year old son would tag along on the road trip from Northern Illinois to Nashville so I could visit Steel Guitar World. Then, as now, I was a basic utility pedal steel player copying licks from George Strait, Randy Travis and others to support the 'Rodeo Band' at dance hall gigs.

Bobbe would insist I 'test' the guitars I was interested in while he looked on. The guy had a way of making me feel like John Hughey in spite of how badly I played while 'testing'.

Made you feel about 10 feet tall.

One visit he invited my family to come with him to the Opry where he was playing that night for Jean Shepard. Our son was under the minimum age to get backstage (I think it was 12). The gatekeeper wasn't going to let us backstage - until Bobbe got Jean Shepard to run blockade. She tore into that poor guard like a pit bull.

I have a collection of photos of my then young son meeting and talking and shaking hands backstage with just about every performer on the show that night.

Bobbe hovered over us like a proud uncle.

What a fellow he was...

I'm really happy you posted this video. Thank you!
