| I have heard some of Anthony Locke's and Mike Neer's work on non-pedal plus Buddy Emmons and Buzz Evans on pedal steel. Who are some other jazz steelers that I should check out? I am more interested in lap at the present but would love to hear more pedal players as well. Thanks. |

+1 for Dan Jones & Standard Deviations. Caught their set at the Denver Steel Show a couple years back. Had to grab my jaw with both hands to keep it from dragging on the ground on the way out the door.
If you're into the hot jazz of the early 20th Century, don't overlook the genius of Sol Hoopii. Benny Goodman was considered the "King of Swing." Sol could swing circles around Benny. |

Tom Morrell was one of the best non-pedal jazzers. Joaquin Murphy influenced a lot of folks too, I believe he played in Spade Cooley's band mainly
and although they're mainly pedal players, I've seen video of Doug Jernigan and Bobby Black getting pretty jazzy on lap steel. Emmons too

Maurice "Reece" Anderson. Many recordings of jazz standards if you can find them. Early recordings on Universal Bb pedal steel and some later on lap steel. Great player, greatly missed.

| Mike Neer!!! His "Steelonius" record is one of the only efforts that I can actually imagine being played on Jazz Radio stations....and it's on non pedal! I love all the jazz pedal steel players out there, but I sorta get why you don't hear them on jazz radio. Just my opinion of course. |

Maurice Anderson, listed above, has a bunch of lap steel videos on YouTube - he was my teacher, and especially in the area of chords (on lap or pedal) he’s the king in my book, although his single note solos are remarkable
He played 12 string, lap and pedal, and really dialed in the tuning to be able to play things on lap steel that sound impossible

You just completely made my day, brother - I have a jazz steel gig with my Quartet tomorrow night, and today I was about to a lonnngggg day of practice (I’ve had to spend the last few days learning 23 tunes on guitar for Elton John show I did last night), and I have been feeling the “damn I suck at steel†malaise (I think we all know this one!). You just made me smile and put the picks on with a much better attitude!
