It's Speedy! I read him telling a story about that solo. On that particular take he lost a fingerpick in a middle of a song, so he chose to just "doo-wah" the whole solo and they ended up using that take on the record.
If you dug that solo, you should see those Tennessee Ernie soundie films, where Speedy and Jimmy Bryant go crazy, talk about showmanship.

Gene Jones strikes again.

You are right Gene...Speedy told me that he did so many sessions and ran from studio to studio back then with that Big Bigsby under
his arm,,,his handle was broke and Tex Ritter once said to Speedy....hey you little
"SOB" I heard a record today that you "weren't on. Speedy as most of you are aware did more recordings than anyone else.

Ever hear the story about his nickname??
Howard?? thats a funny story. But my time is limited and I talk to much anyway....

Gene as always you are right on......

According to the movie, "Coal Miners Daugher" Speedy West was the first one to record Loretta Lynn. I bought a Speedy West record in a German record store in the early fifties. Unlike the players of today, Speedy came up with his own original material. Some of the tunes got a lot of air play in the Nashville market. When Jimmy Bryant came on the Nashville scene, some of the guitar players weren't too happy. As my wife would say, "They had a hissy fit". Jimmy was in the same league as the top guitar players in Nashville. This was the problem.
