This is my first guitar with pedals, a Fender triple neck with 2 pedals installed by Doc Martin in Springfield , Mo. It is in standup position and I used the case to sit on endwise. Bigsby volume/tone control pedal. Age 16 I think.

Dick, it was a Fender but I don’t remember which model. I thnk it had two speakers.

J R, I think the guy to my left is H F Ross. I don’t remember the guy at the mic. I think he may be an MC for whatever the occasion, I don’t think he was with our group. To his left is Herschel Parker and the girl to Herschel’s left is Marilyn Sue Fisher, Clint Fisher’s daughter playing fiddle. To my right on upright bass is my brother, Larry.

This is pretty great, Jerry.
Was the pedal conversion a sort of 'standardized' thing that Doc Martin was doing at the time ("take it to Doc. He'll fix you up") or was he making it up as he went? Was it a good rig or a string breaker? |

Edward, I started on a Supro lap steel at age 15. I was close to 17 when that photo was taken in Greenwood, AR. Jon, Doc Martin was playing on Red Foley’s TV show in Springfield, Mo. It was a neat conversion that worked well to get the Bud Isaacs sound he got on Webb Pierce’s “Slowly”. That sound mystified steel players as we had not heard of pedals on a steel. Doc routed out under the solid body and installed pivoting keystock that activated a plunger that was in a hole (with bushing) that was drilled thru the keyhead and pushed up on the string. It was tunable under the guitar and since it pushed up on the string relieving pressure on the nut it did not break strings. The conversion best I remember cost $106.00. Ben Jack sent his 4 neck Stringmaster up to Doc the same time I sent mine. They were 8 string E tuning so no high G# string and no chromatics.
