What are strings 7&8 tuned to??

Open D is a fabulous tuning but an uncommon tuning for 8-string guitars so it's an open question without much precedent what to put on there. Based on what you want to play and hear, you could consider adding a high F# (3rd) or E (9th) or a low F# or octave D on the bottom. A low G on string 7 might be interesting as well.

Thank you Andy I appreciate your suggestion. I ask because I play Six string Dobro tuned in D and it has become my favorite tuning. I think I have all of your books and they have been a great resource.I understand now why D is not an 8 string lap steel recommended tuning😊

If you are interested in trying a 6th type tuning I would try D6 like this:

D
B
A
F#
D
A
D
I play that tuning up a whole step in E and think it works well.
