I am curious about the size of the wing nuts that. Attach the pedal rack on a Carter D-10.
Thanks,Stu

Off-hand I can't remember, but I know I took the original one to Lowe's and bought the same thread size with bigger "wings" to make it easier to tighten !

Actually, I drilled out the pedal bar and moved up to the next size thread. Slow memory !

That's small. Go up to 1/4" like John.

I was going to upsize the bolt on a different guitar but the sliding slot on the moving part wouldn't take it. Filing the slot wider seemed like a sloppy situation.

Get rid of those darn wing nuts. Go to a good hardware store and get some threaded knobs. The ones with plastic grips so you can turn them easier.

Is there a problem that requires re-drilling and moving to a different size? If not, I think that is unnecessary. I've had my Carter since '99, and never had issues with the wingnuts or screws.

amazon.com....type "plastic knobs 10-32" in search box.

A really good local hardware store, if there are any of those left, might have it....a little more difficult due to the fine thread.

Thanks Jerry. Stu & I have been kicking this around and I've been limited in my search by the use of the name "thumb nuts". Yep--those are them.

It is worth mentioning that there IS such a thing as getting something too large. Something protruding too much can get in the way of the volume pedal depending on where you set it or if it walks on you.

True...also, the bolts on this Carter are just standard cross point screws with a locking not on the back side of the bar.

One might need to shorten the bolt, or use a shorter one to keep the knob from bottoming out...I think the triangular one shows 1 1/8" of threads, so probably good.

There is also a nylon wing type nut but with wider, sturdier and flatter wings that needs less space than the knob, but I'm not finding those at the moment.

For that bottoming out reason, I'd definitely go with a through-hole knob.

....or you could just drill a hole in the face for the screw to poke through.

Through hole not necessary. There is plenty of thread inside to fit the screw. I got mine at Ace. In the past, I have found them at Home Depot.

Jerry, I’ve got some of those in my pac-a-seat(for just in case!). Pretty sure sure I paid about $1.65 each at a farm supply store in their hardware section! They fit both of my Sho~Buds.

In the hardware stores, they are in the drawers in the nut and bolts aisle. The same drawers that you would find things like cotter pins, roll pins, other oddball hardware.

I know Stu found some, so this info is for others wanting to replace those freakin' wing nuts. Have lost several of those over the years.

Where ever you find them and for what ever brand guitar, I always tell my students to just get spares for those and your pak seat nut. If you are on a stage with an impenetrable crack anywhere on stage, they WILL find it and disappear!

Exactly. Though I never thought to have a spare, that's a good idea. I do carry spare wing nuts though, just in case. I've had wing nuts disappear. I need to get some of these knobs for the Mullen I got a year ago.
