Howdy, y'all.
A hand injury has changed my life course and I've started playing steel. A good friend has been gracious enough to loan me his to learn on but it's time I step up to ownership. I'm not picky, aesthetics are secondary by far to reliable functionality. Looking for something set up to standard E9 3×4 shipped to Chicago! I'm currently selling a National Mandolin if youre open to wacky trades, asking gets you everywhere! |

Hi Gregg, just thought I'd throw this out to you. I don't know your financial situation but it might be worth you wild to hold off until you can afford a steel you don't have to fight with to play. It's hard enough just mastering the intonation (if it can be mastered at all )of the guitar much less really becoming proficient at actually playing the thing. There's always a lot of inventory on the forum for pretty good steels for 1500 to 2000. Another bonus is if ya can swing a better steel, once your ready for a premium quality steel or find out maybe steel just ins't your thing, selling a decent lower end axe wont be such a task. The less you have to fight with, the more you can concentrate on your technique, style and sound. Your sound comes more from your touch. There's tons of guys on the forum who are always willing to help out with start up people. Don't get me wrong, you can probably get something you can play for 1000 or so. There's people who pop up on the forum that sell affordable great steels at a lower prices just to get rid of them but everyone and their brother will be trying to beat ya to the punch on getting it. I bought a Sho-Bud (Baldwin) cross over for my first guitar and although it met my needs at the time, it didn't take long to find out all the things I couldn't do with it. When I went to sell it, it was like pulling teeth to get anywhere close to what I paid for it. Anyway, just food for thought. Good luck on your search!! Even more luck in tackling what to me, is the most outrageous instrument in the world. |

Hey Greg.
I’m in Chicago(Logan Square) and I have a Stage One I would consider selling. |

Barry that’s the best advice I’ve heard on forum in a very long time. |

I would recommend a used (or new) ZUM Stage One (3x4) - in my opinion - it's a great pedal steel. (beginner through professional level)
Every so often one or two show up for sale here and are usually marked SOLD in a few days (that's how I got mine).
Finally - even if you decide pedal steel isn't for you - you'll easily get your investment back.
* edited - updated my opinion - What Michael says

Great one to stay with, too. I have two (sold my first one, regret that). Sold my old Franklin because the Stage One just sounded better. If you like, I can email you a copy of a Dolly track I did with mine so you can hear it. _________________ Mikey D... H.S.P.
