Is the string spacing on a Kline S-12 different than a Kline D-10 or S-10?
Great guitars!!
Thanks, Dave |

It occurs to me that for a given manufacturer, the string spacing would not change, as the builder would add two fingers, rather than redesigning the changer to fit 12 into the space of 10.
Wouldn't be prudent. |

I thought that too Charlie but the spacing on mine and Henry's Kline S-12 guitars is tight compared to our 10 stringers. Joe Kline obviously did not fit 12 strings in the space of 10. Possibly he tigtened things up a bit for the 12 and up guitars.
What about other manufacturers? Anybody?

Some of the Emmons PP 12 string guitars had a different (closer) spacing than the 10 strings. In early 1972, Hank Corwin (he was working for Jim Ed Brown at the time) had a D-10 PP built with "12 string" spacing as Hank thought the closer spacing would be better for his short fingers. I know he had to wait a long time for Ron to build it. |

Hi Dave - I would think that Rick Troyer could answer you very easily. His contact info is on the website http://www.hummingbirdmusicstudio.com/main.html
I've had "2" 12 string push pulls and the string spacing was closer on the Universal than the Extended E9th but they weren't the same year!!! Also the spacing for the S10 push pulls was a little wider than the U12 if I remember correctly although I didn't measure!
If the string spacing gets a little close for your comfort on the Kline I would be happy to take it off your hands
God Bless,

FWIW
I have played various steels, and in my opinion, wider string spacing = better tone.
I can't get on with the narrower string spacing on a 12, the picks snag, and the tone sounds terrible (in my opinion).
Your mileage may vary |

I'm keeping the Kline Larry. It's the most stable and trouble free guitar I've had in my 17 years as a weekend warrior. I won't say that it's the best sounding because each guitar I have (ZB, ShoBud, Fender and Kline)has it's own special unique sound to me. It's all good! Thinking about getting a D-10 if anyone wants to part with one!

Dave,
I have a Kline S-12 and a twin 12 Sho-Bud. The string spacing on the Kline is slightly closer than the Sho-Bud.
I go to Florida in the winter and I see Joe Kline from time to time---he lives in Lakeland. I think he gets on the forum, so he may give you an answer to your question if he happens to see your post. I did have his e-mail address but he moved last year so it is probably not current.
I love my Kline--mainly because I can lift it. I can hardly lift my Sho-Bud. It is about 70 lbs. in the case as opposed to 47 for my Kline. Also the Kline holds tune very well. The pedal action is also great providing you keep it well lubed.

The string spacing on my Kline U-12 that I had was definately closer together than on my Emmons PP that I currently own. I never found the closer spacing to be a problem, though. But my fingers are on the "skinny" side. |

I have owned 3 Kline 12 string guitars since the mid 80's. The string spacing is just a bit tighter than all the others I have tried but it is just part of the greatness of this guitar. It is solid with pedals that feel like they are directly hooked to the strings themselves. I have never found a better feeling guitar since I tried my first Kline in 1985. To each his own but I have tried most of the new ones out now and find Kline to be the best all around steel. Too bad Joe stopped building new ones. If he did, my wife and kids would go without Christmas presents until I had it paid off.... ha ha.
