I've always used Stainless String Sets on my Steel Guitars. Today I decided to try some Nickel Strings. Can anyone tell me what kind of different to expect or encounter.

I have found nickel strings to be a little less bright sounding.

Same as Mike. I prefer nickel wound for tone on my Super Pro with metal necks. I used Ernie Ball Nickel Wounds for over 35 years. Last couple years I have been using Live Steel Nickel Wounds. They sound good, but I may go back to Ernie Balls over the winter. I did experiment with many other brands over the years but I always ended up back with Ernie Balls.

I've tried several brands of nickel, including the NYXL, and keep going back to George L's (Stainless steel on wounds).

I just use whatever is on sale. I have a local source for SIT strings @ $7 a set ! C6 and E9 , what a deal !

They're nickel by the way.

SIT nickel for me. Best price, sound good and good lifespan. I too find the nickel strings to have a more mellow tone.

The wound stainless strings stay twangy longer, but they also have a "scratchy" feel. This can cause more bar noise when your sliding the bar.

Nick,

I've always preferred Nickel, for the warmer tone vs stainless, but I'm in the process of trying some custom Ernie Ball sets - using nickel for the plain strings, and their coated (Elixir) wound strings. I'll be glad to let you know what I think of those, once I've had more time on them. Certainly longer life...

Sincerely,

David Spires

GHS wound strings sound the best on my rig (2003 Sierra U12)
They say “Dynamite Alloy” not sure what the ratio of metals is but they really work better than nickel or stainless for me.
For the plain strings I love Live Steels all the way!
