So the old Maverick was making a horrible hum/scratch noise so I took the pickup out for examination. Looks like someone had done a questionable repair on it so I'm trying to get it right. the black wire goes into the pickup coil and the red wire looks like it had been taped to the copper coil wire itself on the outside. Should the red wire be soldered to the coil or simply re-taped like I found it?

Fred, a pickup is basically a long coil of wire wrapped around a magnet. The red lead should be soldered to one end of the coil, and the black to the other. It looks to me like your coil got damaged, so somebody just poked around with the end of the red wire until they got continuity, and taped it in place. I don't see any way that pickup is repairable, short of sending it out to be re-wound. You might consider just replacing it, used pickups are always popping up on the forum. |
