So sad, As a young kid in the Northeast, the only country music we had, was Hee Haw, and we watched it all the time.
R.I.P. Roy and condolences to his family!! _________________ Regards, Craig

Roy was not only a master technician on several instruments but one of the last in a long line of vaudeville-like performers who could hold a crowd spellbound with just an instrument and their personality. He would pull off the most impossible licks while wearing an expression like a kid caught with his hand in the cookie jar. I can't really call him an influence but I always had the utmost respect for his abilities and all that he accomplished as an entertainer and in particular, as an amazing picker. RIP. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

I only met him one time. We did a show at Himmelreich Grove park (Pennsylvania) in 1965. The park had Sunday country music shows with one or two local bands and one major name band or entertainer. Roy had worked the Jimmy Dean show the night before. |

Andy's got it--he excelled as an entertainer as much as he did as a guitarist.
He was 85---complications from pneumonia. I hadn't realized he had been inducted into the Country Music Hall Of Fame.
I think he owned a Super Stearman for a while--gotta love a guy who'd do that.
I never much liked his singing, but he lit it up whenever he soloed.
He and Jimmy Dean go back to the early-mid 1950s, at least. Dean's Texas Wildcats was a honking band at that time with Roy and Marvin Carroll on steel. Dean never sounded this good later on.
With Wanda in Phoenix. He played the hot guitar on most of her early rockers.

I just remember how he could crack you up with just his grin, he and Dad never had a straight face when we were doing stuff during the old Melobar days with him. This shot they were "supposed" to be getting a radio ad done in a hotel suite, Dad brought in an amp and they started fooling around and about got us kicked out of the place... We're going to miss you Roy

The first time I saw Roy Clark, he came out to front a big name act all alone. No band. I thought man, this guy can't entertain this auditorium full of people by his self. Well, I got fooled. Not only did he entertain them, he had them completely where he wanted them. Including me. I remember him. I don't remember who he was fronting.
I met him when the band I was in fronted his show at the Weirsdale Opry. He was as nice a person as I thought he would be. Same as you see on TV.
Rest in Peace Roy. You have a lot of friends on the other side to catch up with. _________________ Carter 12 string 4petals 5knees, Mullen G2 3 petals 4 knees

Now it appears the hoax story is a hoax and he DID pass away. I think I have a good sense of humor, but I just fail to find ANYTHING funny about spoofing somebody's passing. Very poor taste if you ask me! _________________ Many play better than I do. Nobody has more fun. |

Roys fingers could tumble like a circus athlete up n down most any stringed instrument. Demonstrated his astounding natural ability with ease, and flash galore, like he was saying "If I can do it like this, so can any player." Cut from the same cloth as a Merle Travis, or Chet Atkins... add in his bubbly, personable, infectious enthusiasm, yet down home enuf for any audience. Always ready for that "special guest appearance". Will be most sorely missed here on earth, but a welcome standout performer on high. |

In my college years (both in KS and NM) he would do the state fair circuit. I would play the tuba in the band for the rodeo, and got to stay and watch the show afterwards for free.
He always did a penultimate "Malegueña" and it was among the most inspiring experiences I've had in my life. |

IN the mid to late sixties I stood right down in front of the stage two nights running at the Alabama State Fair & listened/watched Roy Perform. In his closing number he said what I'm going to play now will scar some of your young guitar players for life and said with that big smile on his face. "some of us have it and some don't" and he lit off on "Malaguena" and brought the hose down...........what memories

Roy had the whole package - terrific musician, fine singer, and great entertainer. A guitarist's guitarist, he was a technician but a lot more than a technician. RIP, Roy. |

Besides being a great entertainer, he was also a pilot, and owned and flew several airplanes, including a couple of Mitsubishi jets. _________________ Darvin Willhoite

Above link to a 32 minute filmed interview with Roy, probably no more than 2 years ago. He is a bit frail and has a raspy voice.
It's quite good.....he covers a lot of topics. Jack Webb, raising the strings on a standard guitar to play Hawaiian, backing Elvis in Washington DC before Elvis went in the army, hosting the Tonight Show, Jimmy Dean, placing his hands in ice water to numb the pain so he could continue to practice, encountering Hank Williams, etc.
Here's a screen grab--I wonder who that is on steel? Quite possibly a Washington DC or Virginia area player.
