On some guitars there is a set screw in a hole that you would use an Allen wrench on to back that screw out some to increase the angle of where the lever hinges. Fold the lever back and look.

The Vert lever on a Derby is riveted to the mechanism and does not fold or have an adjustable tilt screw like others do.

You can adjust the height of it somewhat though by pulling the pull rod[s] tighter at the bell crank[s] and re-adjusting the stops. Here is an old post from our dear departed friend Big John Bechtel that details the procedure:

John Bechtel wrote:
I beg to differ with your conclusion that Derby Vertical~Knees are not adjustable! They are very adjustable! There is an (allen) adjustment-screw on the cross-rod which adjusts the starting-point of the change and a nylon-screw under the lever which adjusts the stopping height! You need to loosen the pull-rod on the bellcrank and allow the pull-rod to lengthen slightly. It is quite simple to adjust the height and the case-lid will still close safely! Bring it here and I'll adjust it in less than 15-min.!

Well there you go and much less painful than having your shin lengthened.

Thanks all for your help I got it lowered about an inch which helps....Have to move up to get the diminished one fret up w/ pedals down and e's/eb's & vertical engaged! I will probably shorten the back legs. Anyway it is better than it was. Out for now....

Seems like the simplest way would be to add something to the bottom edge of the lever. My Derby has removable paddles on 3 knee levers, which make them wider. You could make something up at lowers the contact area of the lever and still be removable.

If enough adjustment was not built into the guitar to adjust it to fit you.
The simplest and easiest solution would be, Add whatever it takes to the bottom of the lever, Where it contacts your leg. So you can get enough movement for the change.
Whatever you use, Be sure to check putting the guitar in its case and the lid properly closing.
Whatever you use for extension should be easy to remove and be put on tight for use.
If the knee lever is attached on a cross rod moving would be very hard.
If the knee lever bracket is attached to the body of the guitar with screws. You may be able to add a shim between the body and the knee lever bracket, And reattach with proper longer screws.
Be sure to check and make sure the guitar will fit in its case with this modification also.
Good Luck finding a solution for the problem and back to Happy Steelin.

I would build something like this out of wood, making sure the height is right and assuring a not too snug fit, and just slide it over the knee lever – easy to remove if the case won't close.

I like that idea Per. Maybe a set screw to keep it from moving around. I have the same problem with vertical lever height on my Derby. So far I have just dealt with it.

Great idea Per. Similar to my suggestion.
A set screw, Or some type of VELCRO attachment would be great if it has to be removed to go in the case.

I took the vertical lever off my Derby and rounded the square edges some so it would fold back to put in the case. I liked that better. Mullen makes a vertical extender that I bought for my Mullen. It makes the vertical at less of a downward angle and more straight across, and that diminished chord is easier to make. It doesn't look like it would be too hard to replicate.
