With Or Without You played in one take without overdubs using a Tc electronics ditto looper and an Ebow. This piece is dedicated to John Blakey who sadly passed away earlier this year. John manufactured and fitted the CC pickup into this Gold Tone lap steel. John was a true gentleman and will be sadly missed. I hope you all enjoy! Mike.

That's impressive Mike.
So sorry to hear that John had passed. I fitted one of his 8 string CC pickups to my lap steel and last weekend Derek Thurlby loved the sound of it at our recent North East Steelies meeting.
Your arrangement of the tune is great, the looper and eBow are very effectively used.

Hi Keith, Johns passing away was very unexpected and sad. especially for his immediate family. A stroke and only 55!!!! Thank you for your kind words re the tune. I shall have to get over to the steelies meeting sometime. It would be nice to meet you all and get a little bit of inspiration.

Hey, Mike, if you had two Ebows side by side, does it look like they would work on 2 non-adjacent strings, like string 3 and 5, or 4 and 6? I play pedal steel, so its spacing is narrower than on your lap steel.
Thanks for your best guess! _________________ E9 INSTRUCTION

nice work, great use of looper. My only suggestion would be: you might want to use a little volume pedal when you start playing the melody. It might make the transition from ebow to plucked strings a little bit smoother. |

John. I don't really think this would be easy. For one thing the ebow locates on the 2 adjacent strings as you play. Holding 1 Ebow and trying to control it is a bit like controlling a pack of howling dogs. Not suggesting it is not possible.............just not easy.
Bill. I have a volume pedal and never really use it.....which is a mistake. It is certainly on the list to work at. I totally get what you are saying. I think it would help also!
Thank you Will. The CC pickups are really nice IMHO! |

That’s an absolutely beautiful arrangement, Mike. I have it on repeat play!
Now I’m thinking about getting a new e-bow. My old one fell apart from a leaky battery |

Thank you Miles. Also thank you for reminding me to take the battery out of the Ebow. They are the sort of thing that sits in the draw for a long time and then when you get the inspiration to use them the battery as leaked! |

Thank you Chris for you kind comments. Peter the TC Ditto looper is inexpensive and a very simple no frills affair with just the one button. Apart from its ease of use it is true bypass so should not colour your signal. Most of all it's just plain fun! |

Mike, that was really cool. I love seeing a piece of music constructed bit by bit. _________________ Steel Guitar Books! Website: www.volkmediabooks.com |

Thank you Bert, Andy and Doug. I was thinking about your fender quad Doug when I was working this out. I initially started on a C6 6 string but decided I needed more range as all the frequencies seemed to be fighting each other in the 1.5 octave or so I had to work in. Thats why I chose the EBDGBD tuning for the extended bass end. But I imagine your quad with its bass strings on one neck and a couple of strum tunings on the other necks as well as C6 would be a lot of fun with the looper!
