I’ve started arranging and recording demos for my next CD, which will be a tribute to the music of Horace Silver and a little more focused on my Soul, Blues and Jazz leanings.
This is Juicy Lucy. It’s a steel guitar party pretty much—since I’m playing all the tracks on the demos, why not? Anyway, they are just part of the process of me getting to know the tunes better and finding out what works and what doesn’t. I used the wah in the first two choruses to get a more vocal like quality, since I was pretending to be Marvin Gaye,

Thanks for listening, everyone!
This is a really fun time for me, demoing tunes, sort of experimenting and trying to lay down tracks the way I'm hearing them in my head. Sometimes this all starts to come together before I really even have the tune under my fingers (or bar). This is one of those cases. It will surely change the more I sit with it.
I have a almost a complete list of tunes for my next CD--I have only been playing about three of them with my band, the rest I haven't completely charted or worked out. Song For My Father will not be one of them. Horace's amazing catalog is way too vast and I want to explore it deeper. I hope to get some new folks interested in his music and jazz compositions in general.
To answer Keith's question, I use C13 (Jules Ah See version).

Senor Blues is another good Horace tune. Also The Preacher.

Great demo, Mike, and I gave it a shout out on a demo I posted on this forum of a down tempo version of "Yardbird Suite." Hope you check it out.
Like I said in that post, I see you as one of the few lap steel players working in the bop/post-bop idiom. My steel background is mostly E9 pedal steel with only a small bit of C6 playing. I got a lap steel for the first time this past summer and want to dig into more jazz from this era and it would be great to hear other players delving into this material too.
Thanks again for all the tracks, Mike. Looking forward to the Horace Silver CD -- for modified 12-bar stuff, are Filthy McNasty or The Jody Grind in the mix? |

I’ll happily share a couple of demos that I’ve recorded as a way of testing the waters and seeing if I can live with the arrangements. They are also a great way of communicating with my musicians with regard to feel.
Here is one I dig called Ecaroh. I recorded this really quickly. Programming the drums on my ipad took more time than everything put together!
