I'm super excited for the reunion of Russ Hicks with rock gods Ween this Tue and Wed night at The Ryman! Russ is part of the Nashville crew joining Ween for both nights, dubbed The Sh*t Creek Boys after a lyric on their '12 Golden Country Greats' album.
Russ cut all the stellar steel parts with them in 1996, an album I cut my teeth on! they toured behind it, but Russ stayed home and Stu Basore took over the steel chair. Stu ended up playing on their 'White Pepper' album a couple years later and appears on two live Ween releases.
here's a couple tracks featuring classic Russ Hicks licks:
Help Me Scrape the Mucus Off My Brain
Fluffy
(most of us will recognize the very last phrase Russ plays on this one!)
they'll be performing the country album in its entirety both nights along with a slew of other Ween tunes. other musicians sitting in include Hank Singer on fiddle, Bobby Ogdin on keys, and Danny Parks on guitar.
this is gonna be a fun one! come out if you can
here's Russ with drummer Claude Coleman Jr at today's rehearsal

Hello Scott.
I love “12 Golden Country Greatsâ€. I still remember when I bought it out of a box on St. Marks Square, NYC in 1996 for $1. I still listen to it and still love Russ’s playing on it. Here’s my favorite, “I’m Holding Youâ€.

My friend Glenn McClelland plays keyboards for Ween. When I bought the album I asked him why there were only 10 tracks...turns out the "12 Golden Country Greats" refers to the PLAYERS on the album. |
