Topic: Bobby Black's Steel Guitars for sale |

I just visited Bobby Black and returned with a number of his steel guitars for sale including a Rickenbacker D16, a Fender Stringmaster D8, a Fender Deluxe D8, and an MSA Superslide 10/12 (currently setup as a 10 string) in pristine condition. I also have a number of tone bars as well as some of his CD's . I'll be listing the guitars on my website soon (www.steelguitars.me under the inventory tab) but please don't hesitate to give me a holler if something strikes your fancy right off the bat. The prices have yet to be determined but the history alone is worth the price of admission  .

I don't think that's the case Abe unless there is a recent downturn with Bobby's health. I have seen him play several times over the past few years and what he mostly uses are either his black Carter D-10 pedal steel, or if he is going non-pedal it's his West Coast Steel Guitars S-12 w/legs. Other times I've seen him use a Fender D-8 non-pedal.
But he likes that West Coast S-12 a lot and he has told me that he gets tired sometimes of hauling the Carter around.
Bobby has about 20 years on me and I've been starting to "downsize" - maybe it's finally occurred to him that he should start doing the same - but I swear the man has made multiple visits to the Fountain of Youth!
I believe Todd Clinesmith built him a guitar a while back, but I haven't seen him play that one.
When he first got the SuperSlide a number of years ago I saw him use it a couple times, but I'm not sure if he ever really completely "bonded" with it. But man, he sure sounded great on it.
But I will tell you, I love what he gets out of the West Coast Steel - when he brings that one to a gig I don't miss the Carter D-10 at all. It makes me realize that when a player is as great as Bobby you con forego the pedals and still sound amazing.
If there is other stuff going on with Mr. Black then I'm sure Jim Palenscar knows the story.

I don't recall ever seeing him play that red Carter, but then I've seen him play quite a bit over the years - maybe that one does a lot of case time - or it's a new/used acquisition, and he's moving out some old guitars to make room.
But wait - there's even more Carters from were that came from! 
Or is it the same guitar but with different lighting in the photo?
This is from a show from nearby Sebastopol in 2016.

Yeah, they still get together every once in awhile here in Northern Calif. Bobby wasn't with him, but Bill put a on an amazing show a few years ago at Hardly Strictly Bluegrass in San Francisco.

The Carter he had that night was definitely red, we got there early and I was able to scope out his gear and talk to him briefly, really nice guy ! Terrific show

| I know this is a little off the subject of Jim selling Bobby's steels but I can't help but tear up a little bit looking at these pictures. Bobby was one of my heroes when I first started playing - well heck, he still is!! I remember warming up for CC and The Lost Planet Airmen and I was sooo danged nervous I could hardly play, not because of the packed house, but because I thought he might be in the house listening. I think he was on the bus but it sure put a lot of pressure on me. I kicked Bill's '52 Tele over and didn't even realize it. Sorry again Bill! Then I saw Bobby again in '99 in St Louis playing a straight steel. Unbelievable. What a master and great player!! Salute to you Mr. Black!!!! You are truly one the very best and still an inspiration to me. |

| Like Gary's post I was in Davis, CA in the early 70's opening for Bill Kirchen and the Moonlighters and I was sure Bobby was in the band (he wasn't) and I finally had to take my foot off of the volume pedal because it was shaking so bad the tremolo was just awful . |

I just have to say that Bobby Black was my main inspiration in learning to play pedal steel guitar in the early '70s. Sooo smooth. Watching Commander Cody when they came up here in New England was about the only chance I ever got to hear a world-class player - in a world-class band.

Amazing indeed! The song is Hank William's "There'll Be No Teardrops Tonight".
He gives credit to Jerry Byrd for the original recording then pulls off those J.B. style bridges, each better and better.  |
