I remember watching that when it aired. That was my first time hearing Paul. I was blown away then just like I still am today. Country music right there.

I saw Paul with Mel in Fort Worth at the Will Rogers Auditorium in 1980 and later that night I had a gig at the Speakeasy Club near there. In those days, stars would stop in clubs and hang out after their show. Mel and his band came in and asked to sit in so we said sure. They played about 45 minutes and made us look like you know what. I was just learning steel and didn't have one there although I don't think Paul came with them because I didn't see him. I just remember how unbelievable Paul was on that steel.
Luckily I had a girlfriend who had brought a camera and got this picture but I wished Paul had been in the picture.

At 11:00 in that clip is a close up on Paul’s hands, and you can see his left index is positioned on the bar in a very relaxed arch, with only the fingertip making contact with the bar. He plays now with his index flat on top of the bar, a la Buddy Emmons. I wonder when he changed this technique, and why?
I just thought that was interesting. Great band indeed, btw. |
