Thinking about selling my NV112 and surprised to learn that it would cost over $90 to ship it coast to coast. Is there a less expensive way to ship than usps or ups etc? I would like to get $350 for the amp and once it's all said and done, the buyer could be into it for around $450 which makes the buyer's deal much less attractive  |

I don't know about a cheaper way, but that's what it's getting to be now $100-$200 to ship an amp or a steel for that matter.

Shipping is getting expensive. I've had a couple rude awakings lately. To ship a pedal steel,even a single neck,it will cost well over $100 now. Buyers and seller will have to adjust. If you want something,you just have to pay for it.

| I shipped my old Fender UPS a month or so ago, and insured it for $1K. I recall it was $120 to Chicago! |

| The $100 range to ship an amp is spot on. A few months ago I got a quote to ship an amp and the person I was quoting the shipping for didn’t like it and said I was full of it. I was expecting $60-75 to ship so it surprised me when my UPS store came back with the pricing. |

| Interesting. I have a NV112 that I'm considering posting for sale. I didn't think it would be that much but I'll keep the $100 in mind. If I do decide to sell it maybe I can find a local (or near local) buyer. |

I would check with Greyhound bus. Less handling so less chance of damage. The buyer would have to go to bus terminal to pick it up.

1. Pack yourself (so the amp can survive an 8' fall onto concrete, including padding/bubble wrap to keep speakers from inadvertently moving/rattling loose); don't use peanuts - they shift.
Don't leave handles exposed - they can get caught on conveyors.
Don't waste time with writing or using labels that say This side up, fragile or whatever - 90% of the handling is by machines that only read bar codes, and drivers are on schedules that preclude them from taking time to read anything but the address on their handheld computer and that it matches the one on the box.
Weigh it and do all the shipping documents/payments on line. UPS Stores are not owned by UPS FedEx/Kinkos same deal - and most upcharge shipping processed in the store.
I use UPs, but UPS, FedEx and the USPS are all about the same, and $100 or so for an average amp coast to coast is the going rate.
Never used Greyhound and it sounds - weird. The nearest bus terminal is in downtown LA. Hmmm - drive an hour each way in traffic or 5 minutes to the UPS store to drop a package off.? No brainer. I can't even imagine telling a buyer "thanks for your purchase. You'll have to go pick it up at (fill in bus terminal address you hope is close to them)." To save THEM $10 or $20? Who would even want that?

Jim, certainly Greyhound is not the answer for every shipment but it is worth consideration. Never say “neverâ€. I sent a heavy Randall amp to Redd Volkert on Greyhound and he received it the next day in good shape. I received my first Emmons guitar from Brian Adams via Greyhound.

Greyhound works great. I worked at a company in the SF Bay Area, and we had a service technician in sacramento. If he needed something same day or early the next day, I would take what he needed to Greyhound, and it would there, unharmed. That was only a 100 mile trip, so it will obviously take longer, but it will show up in great shape. The cargo doesn't go through huge distribution centers where they ride (and fall off) long conveyors.
The drag is, you have to take it to a Greyhound station and pick it up from one. No door to door service. A lot of cities don't have Greyhound stations. Mine doesn't, but I would gladly drive 100 miles to make sure I have an intact parcel.
I bought a used steel guitar off someone, and they used Greyhound. It arrived in great condition. It came from Louisiana to the SF Bay Area.

| My Franklin was shipped by Greyhound bus from Nashville to Kansas City, Mo (where I lived at the time). Mr Franklin said that was the safest way they found when he worked at Sho-Bud and how he shipped all his Franklins at the time. |

I just took a Session 400 in to ship fron Ca. to Tx.
75 lbs
Shipping and ins, $137.00
Probably not going to get any cheaper in the future.

Greyhounds is Only a hassle if getting to Greyhound is a hassle.
Where I live, it’s easy to get to. They have a separate freight area , not unlike a UPS or FedEx counter. Mine has separate parking for the freight pickup area, which is a big help.
You’re not actually placing the item, or retrieving the item from the Bus. The transaction is no different from shipping and receiving a shipment from UPS, FedEx, or USPS.
Ive used them quite a bit in my day job. They’ve been easy to deal with, and I have to assume with less handling of your package, an attractive alternative. |

Has anyone tried Old Dominion? I have had a couple of deliveries of purchases delivered by them. I had to pick them up at dock but it would be an option to check into.

I’m going to second the vote for Greyhound. I received a Seasion 500 via Greyhound with no issues whatsoever. Shipper drops it off at the bus stop and it’s loaded under the bus with the rest of the luggage so no conveyors and it’s a foot and a half off the ground so no eight foot drops. Buyer meets the bus on their end and it’s unloaded right in front of you. They were also substantially less expensive than UPS or FedEx.

Yep they’ve been doing this for years. I also shipped a steel from Texas to Michigan via Greyhound. Had an amp shipped to me the same way. Great if you have a Greyhound bus stop close to both ends.

For those of us in the LA area Greyhound is out - both shipping and receiving. Well, unless you live in Skid Row near downtown LA or Long Beach Seriously, that's where the nearest Greyhound locations are.
Long Beach would be 45 minutes minimum each way; Downtown LA an hour plus. Who knows how long it would take to wait in line & handle paperwork.
With ANY other shipper I process all paperwork and pay from my computer. I can drop it off, but with UPS and FedEx they pick it up. For free. All you have to do is open an account with a debit or credit card, and both give you better rates than the UPS Store or FedEx/Kinkos
I note Greyhound will pickup and deliver - for additional charges. They only deliver to the curb and signatures are required. They also have a 100# max weight limit, FWIW.
or what I seen posted as differences in prices it only seems to make sense if both parties live within a mile or two of a shipping location. I just don't see any advantage for most sellers or buyers at all.
But I couldn't use them at all - physical problems make it tough to drop heavy packages off, and I can't move one up a driveway and stairs from the curb. No "door delivery" is just poor service IMO.

Jim wow! They stop at every little piss pot podunk town in Texas it seems. I’d not call their no door service poor service, I’d say it’s a more affordable option for those who are able to utilize it. If someone is like me and making every cent count the savings in shipping could make the difference as to whether or not I could afford a purchase.
