Anybody have any hints on the best way to keep your fretboard clear of dust and dirt withouth having to destring the instrument?

Bill, I have used flannel cloth (12" x 9") which I fold double (12" x 4 1/2"). I slip the double
under the strings and wipe the fretboard by pulling it back and forth, and then up against the
strings by pulling it back and forth. Then I take it from under the strings and grip and wipe
each string up and down the full length at least 2 times. Then I wipe the entire instrument,
lap steels, front and back, with the cloth. This method has done a good job for my instruments
for many years, and the cloth is easy to carry in the case with the instrument.

I do basically what CE does, but I use a microfiber cloth, the kind found in the Auto section of Walmart.
They sure do have a habit of collecting dust.

i use a piece of an old nylon bedsheet as i don't want any lint left behind. it is good for above and below the strings.

Someone used to sell a padded piece of chamois cloth affixed to a painter's mixing stick. Was good especially for 3D fretboards ("dustcatchers"). Easy enough to put together something like that oneself.

Compressed air under strings from the key head to changer. Sometimes just a soft rag if I'm not concerned about the key head area.

I use a combo of what Tony and Bill are doing. Compressed air around the pick up and hard to reach places and a microfiber cloth for the other parts. You can buy them in a pack from your local auto parts store.
