I recently installed a Lawrence 710 in my Derby. The 710's pole pieces extend well below the bottom of the housing. The pickup actually sits on the pole pieces. The result is piercing, icepick highs, even when lowering the pickup mounting plate as low as it will go. Derbys have three-screw, Emmons style mounting plates. I can EQ the icepick highs out, but not without completely muddying the tone. The pole pieces are not loose. I have two of these pickups. The pole pieces extend the same distance below the housing on both pickups. Has anybody else had this happen with a 710?

As I recall, the 710 was designed to be used with a passive (pot) volume pedal and are inherently bright. Are you using an active volume pedal and/or a buffer? |

I've used 710's since the early 80's, in 3 different guitars (Sho~Bud Super Pro, SB Professional, and Carter D10), usind a Goodrich 120, Goodrich LDR-2, and a Hilton. I've never noticed any real differences. _________________ Carter D10 8p/8k, Dekley S10 3p/4k C6 setup,Regal RD40 Dobro, Recording King Professional Dobro, NV400, NV112,Ibanez Gio guitar, Epiphone SG Special (open D slide guitar) . Playing for 55 years and still counting. |

I have 710's on my Franklin and they work properly. A friend put 710's on his Emmons LL2 and they had too much highs. His pickups were set too close to the strings. He set them as far away from the strings as the Emmons would allow and its working OK.
3/16" is about right. I have the 710's adjusted a "loose" 3/16" on my Franklin. I had Mr Franklin check my guitar about 6 or 7 years ago and he mentioned I had the pickups set correctly.
They work with a pot volume pedal or with a Hilton. I have a Goodrich 120 pot pedal and a Hilton. I normally use the Hilton but have used the Goodrich on occasion and the 710 pickups work equally well with both. |

Lee - I was using a Hilton volume pedal. I have a couple of pot pedals, but didn't try them. I thought the issue was with the pickup being too close to the strings that an different VP would not make the difference.
Jack - I didn't measure then distance from the pole pieces to the strings, but it was less than 1/8 inch with pickup as low as I could set it. Maybe it's just the way the Derby is built. |

You are probably right about the pickup being too close to the strings.

Lee. Thanks for the links. I found them around the time you posted them.
I guess it isn't the end of the world if I can't figure this out. I like the sound of the 710 in other steels. My Derby sounds great with a 705. I put an E66 in it after I took the 710 out. I can make the E66 sound almost more like a Push/Pull ( Gasp! Yikes! Sacrilege!) than a Push/Pull in that guitar. So why am I messing with the 710? You know, sometimes you just want to know, you know? |
