I can't find any info on this guitar....
Engraved in it is "Bergen Special"...
It's just a 3 floor and 1 knee steel.

Gav, is the body covered with a plastic finish? Could be a Sidekick or a Red Baron. If so wouldn't price out all that different than a plastic-finish Maverick I wouldn't think. |

I've never heard of a "Bergen Special" (unless that was a Charlie McCarthy or Mortimer Snerd doll), but the Red Baron was cheaply made, one step above being a "toy", and the Sidekick wasn't much better. You'd probably be doing good to get $200-$300, and that's if they were in real good shape. I've seen some ragged-out examples sell for around $150. |

Everyone should have a Red Baron for their first steel. It will make your next one, which would be in about a week, seem like a mechanical marvel.
I bought it for $525 (I didn't know any better); I sold it for $500 (the buyer didn't know any better.)
In a showroom, it would have to bring much less. |

First off, hey Bob!
Second, the body does not seem to be a laminate...I'm guessing it's more of a carbon composite.
The "Bergen" plate on it, I don't know if that's factory or what. I'm assuming not since no one has heard of it.
Now, for a starter guitar this thing is pretty swank....very, very, well machined, makes my steel look like a clunker.
So, maybe a better question would be "how much for a used well made starter?"....

I was just reminded by a friend of mine (another MSA owner), that the Sidekick guitar had a version that was actually decent. It was called the "Pro-Am Sidekick", and was a cut above the plain old Sidekick, which was still better than that "Red Baron" thing they made. As to your comment on the machining, yes, MSA took the machining of pedal guitars to new heights. Most older guitars (like the Sho-Buds, Marlens, Wrights, and a few others, had some pretty crappy machine-work. Emmons was the first real step up in machining quality, and then MSA really set the standard when they introduced their "Micro" models in '72. Let's price their starter models according to what I feel they're worth (in excellent condition)...
Red Baron...$150-$250
Sidekick...$200-$300
"Pro-Am" Sidekick...$250-$350
The next step up was the "Semi-Classic" model, which might go for $350-$500, maybe a little more with extra pedals. This model was mechanically (but not cosmetically) equal to their top-of-the-line "Classic" models, one of which I played for almost 30 years.
As with any item that's for sale, the "what it's worth" is really what somebody is willing to pay, which may vary depending on what the proposed buyer knows, and how much money he's got!
I do feel, however, that my figures are "in the ballpark" for the present U.S. market.
Good luck! |

I don't think I understand how the conclusion was made that it's an MSA starter? |

Hey Bob,
This guitar has a 3+1 setup...I assumed that serious players would require more knee levers...so, starter guitar?
By all accounts of design, it seems as pro as any though.

No Pete.
Even the cheap Red Baron has a pickup, and tuning keys!
Bob...3+1, a black plastic body, well-machined parts, and the "MSA" means it is, in all liklihood, an early Sidekick.[This message was edited by Donny Hinson on 08 October 2005 at 02:07 PM.] |
