I'm wondering who played steel on Mel Street's recordings. Sounds like the same player on all. I'm sure someone remembers. Thanks John

I miss him; below is one of my favorite cuts by Mel. In addition to his great baritone voice, it's a wistful, wonderful song. The whole thing seems beautiful and uncluttered, despite all the instruments used. There's no steel intro or ride, but listen closely - the steel backup work is both incredible and unique.

Cool

Mel shot himself behind his tour bus. His drummer at the time was a fellow named Tim Legan from Springfield, Missouri. After Mel's death Tim and I were in a night club band for 4 years in Branson, Missouri

Yes Mel shot himself on his 43rd Birthday....the same age his Dad took his own life also.
Mel suffered Depression and Alcohol and Drug abuse.
Yes that is Lloyd Green on a Huge amount of his recordings.

Lloyd Green's amazing work of course had to be recreated on stage, to keep the sound from the record. Mel had a young steel player in his band whom we all know well today - Mike Johnson.

Here's one of these early clips:

Mike Johnson's employer in his early days.

One of the best country artists ever. He was like the Daryle Singletary of today, in my opinion. What a tragic end to his life.

Wish we could hear music like that coming out of Nashville today.

Jimmy Peppers did some producing (and song writing) after he left George Jones. Peppers is listed as the Producer and Arranger for Mel's last album, "The Town Where You Live".

Thanks so much guys. A lot of very interesting info. I've always been a big MEL FAN. And Kieth, I am really enjoying the pro guitar pedal. Wouldn't trade it for anything. Thanks again. John
