If cabinet drop is a function of frame bending, will a steel or aluminum frame resist it better than wood?
Has anyone added a metal channel or angle inside the front apron? It seems this would have been considered by manufacturers long ago if it would cure the problem. |

"Cabinet drop" - which has come to mean any type of detuning - has many factors, according to several builders I've talked to. The actual flexing of the cabinet is only one part of the overall detuning issue.
Do a search on this forum. It's been discussed many times. |

What was once thought to be a component of cabinet drop was the tuning machines flexing, when the tolerances of the holes where they are mounted were not right.
Most builders have figured this out now.

"The Pro Model is constructed with all maple die board bodies, supported by a welded 6061-T6 aluminum frame, consisting of four different extrusions. A 1/4" thick center strip extends from the top of the bodies, down through to the bottom and has "T" flanges on the underside to support both necks. This center strip extends from one end of the bodies to the other and anchors to the frame on each end. The bodies are anchored to the frame with stainless steel screws. All other screws in this instrument are also stainless steel. This body and frame combination provides about as much stability and strength as can be provided in a 40# package".

I had a MCI with a welded frame and it still had more cabinet drop than my Carter or Zum have so it's probably more to do with overall design than just one aspect ! |

I see. A complex question and no simple answers. I'll fuggedaboutit.
Thank you all for your observations.
Interestingly, it was looking at a GFI that raised the question. |
