Hey, Everyone.

I finally have the funds to buy my first pedal steel guitar. Also I'm gonna need to get a hold of a volume pedal, a tone bar and a better tuner.

As far as PSGs go, I'm open to just about anything (and suggestions if you want). I would prefer something newer and easy to service/tinker with. I never decided between s10 and u12 so I think I'll just end up with what I end up with on that front.

I'm comfortable driving to avoid shipping if you're not too far out.

Thanks for reading!

Edit: Deleted mention of an amp.

I’m realizing that I should probably try to avoid wasting anybody’s time on this. So for anyone who’s interested, I’ve got about $2,500 to play with.
I saved for this purpose, so I intend to spend all of it. So whatever the best situation I can get for that price is basically what I get to hope for. : D

Fred's deal is good. I would also suggest considering a Zumsteel Encore - new, they are $1649 with 3x5. Doug's site says he will be accepting orders around mid-June - so I'd say if you contact him, he'd probably take an order now. Wait might be a few months.

You really don't need a volume pedal for the first 6 months or so, so you could hold off on that. But Doug at State One sells a nice pot pedal for $100. Tone bars - I've been using the powder-coated bars that Michael Hillman sells here on the forum.

10 vs. 12 - there are two main types of 12-string steels - extended E9 and Universal. Some people swear by extended E9's, but most don't feel the need for lower strings vs. the 10 string. Universal is a different thing altogether. It typically has at least 7 pedals, and has many of the changes of both C6 and E9 on a double-neck guitar. I tried playing a universal for a while and found it was just too many foot pedals for me to deal with at one time. I ended up going to a D-10. I find pretty experienced players seem to like the Universal idea, particularly if they mostly play E9 country standards, but want to be able to do some basic C6 (well, B6 in universal) for the occasional Western Swing tune. They also, being more musically advanced, like the "one big tuning" idea. For newbies without a musical background, that is many years away!

I hope that helps.

10 string ---------- 10 string --------10 string

as cute as a 12 string is ---- there is NO real advantage

esp. to start off with ---- just more to cofuse you

forget the Zum Encore ------ and all student ???? steel

get a REAL GUITAR AND BE DONE WITH IT ---- AFTER IT IS PAID FOR YOU WILL NEVER CARE WHAT IT COST --- MORTAGE THE HOUSE - DO ANYTHING SHORT OF SELLING YOUR SOUL AND GET A REAL GUITAR.
