Anybody know how David Hartley is doing? I haven't heard anything about him for quite some time. I know he was having some health issues awhile back.

Hey all
David is doing OK.
He has been building an extension to his property and doing lots of home improvements since He and Fran now live together there.
He plays in a duo. I pop in to see them from time to time and take them out for meals.
Been trying to get David to do some videos, like in 2009, but he has been very busy with his home life.
David is always willing for me to tab his playing and does not mind me sharing his work with Forum Members.
I will tell him, as I always do, that folks out there ask about him all the time.
Kind Regards

John I was hoping you would chime in and let everyone know that he is doing good as he is one of the best. I have to listen to David at least twice a week just to keep my heart pumping. Thanks for the update. |

It seems that Mr Dave kind of "bowed out" (for lack of better words) with the passing of John Stannard. They were a good pair, and I enjoyed watching them play.

I was excited to see David post on the forum that he is OK as he is one of the best. Saw him at the Dallas show the last time he was here and I have watched his You Tube vids over and over. It's to darn bad he's not in the DFW area. |

glad David Hartley is doing good..he is a master of the E9th neck...never heard anyone better than King David..what control and what a great tone he gets even when he plays high up on the neck. |

In my Opinion, the only pedal steel players that have mastered the E9th neck as good as David Hartley! Is the master of all pedal Steel Buddy Emmons, and Mike Johnson…that’s just my opinion. _________________ Jeffery S Mercer |

He is as good as anyone I have ever heard on E9, and that includes all the legendary great players we all aspire to. I remember someone here on this forum saying to him when he first started posting here something along these lines-
"Please tell me you are a professional in the UK, and play steel for a living"..
To which David replied-"No, I am just a Coca Cola truck driver that plays for fun".. It was somthing like that.. Reason I remember is because this is a guy that could hang all day with the best players of all time.. He sounds "simple" in a way.. makes you think you could just copy those standard E9 licks down and be off and running.. until you try...
His execution is absolutely flawless, tone is perfect on any steel he touches, he is fast as lightening, and he makes it look effortless. I mean, NEVER a squeak, squawk, half hit note or a note slightly out of time or tune.. i have NO idea how he got such perfect timing and execution.. I wish he'd come around and join us now and again... bob _________________ I'm over the hill and hittin'rocks on the way down!

I agree. David is one of the cleanest players I've ever heard. I agree that he has the chops to be a pro player. I've only heard him play instrumentals, so I don't know if he's comfortable in playing fills with singers, etc... but with his knowledge of country music, he's obviously listened to a lot of it, and I'm betting he understands that part of steel playing as well.
The fact remains that some people want to keep their playing on a hobby level and not depend on it for their way of earning a living. It has nothing to do with how good they play, it's a life choice. I'd say his job with Coke Cola is steady, has good benefits, and a good retirement program. I respect his decision, but he sure is a super player.
