Up there around the top of this list should be Greg Leisz. Check out this video of Greg and Jackson Browne at Bill Asher's booth playing Warren Zevon's Lawyers, Guns and Money at the 2017 NAMM Show in Anaheim.
I think the guitar Greg is playing is a variation on Bill's Ben Harper Signature Model, with a pair of phat sounding humbuckers.

Tony Locke is a fine player for sure, but unless I have missed a bunch, the videos I have seen of him are in the realm of "standards" like Stardust and Begin the Beguine. The original poster was asking about Americana. If you were trying to get a gig for your band and the venue owner wanted "Americana" and would like to hear some samples - would you send him a CD with tunes like Stardust and Begin the Beguine? If there are some out there from Tony that qualify for what is defined as Americana or maybe Roots, someone please point me in the right direction.
It goes for players who I would characterize as more of the retro western swing style as well. The music itself is as American as apple pie, but in terms of where it fits genre-wise, if a venue owner thought he was getting "Americana" and you show up and start playing Bob Wills tunes, he might not be real happy.
Even though it may not be truly what we see as contemporary "Americana" since so many of us here grew up listening to the Allman Brothers, I'm thinking in terms of what Nick is asking in this thread, maybe this version of One Way Out by sisters Rebecca and Megan Lovell (Larkin Poe) fits the bill:

The album featuring Buddy (band leader/music director), Marc Ribot, and Greg Leisz is Majestic Silver Strings on New West Records.
It's a pretty good album - and I think I own literally everything Buddy has ever done either as one of the main guys or under his own name. You could say I'm a big fan.

Two of the gems on the CD are a stark, mournful version of "Bury me not on the lone prairie" and a deadly serious version of Roger Miller's originally tongue-in-check tune, "Dang Me."

We have a VERY long post up about different styles, 15 pages so far, it's really worth it to bookmark it and check the end for the new add-ons... after you've listened to the 100 or so guys in the first 15 pages! Well there goes the summer... most of the people above are in that thready already, but (fortunately!) ther been no need to collate or indexicise it. We just keep adding stuff on, it's kinda... monstrous by now - there are some real howling gems up there for sure. You could tack all the replies above as a link over there - 16 pages, yay!

I’m not entirely sure what constitutes Americana anymore, but a few of the steel players I admired most are Eric Heywood, Greg Leisz, Jon Rauhouse, Jeremy Wakefield and Lee Jeffriess. As you can see, they are pretty different from each other, some pedal steel, and so is the music they make.
I have to add Junior Brown as Citizen #1. Is it Americana? Absolutely.
For Americana, I think it’s super important to listen to pedal steel players.
