If you recall from chapter one, E string 4 would return sharp (measured in Hz) after lowering with LKR. C pedal would return it to pitch.
Diagnosed as hysteresis.
To confirm, I replaced the .014 with an .013. No difference observed. (But I left the .013 on.)
I switched the change to RKL (which I liked better, and will go back to that arrangement). No difference observed.
I tried all suggested remedies except: ignoring the change (I need it) and buying a keyless guitar, courtesy b0b.
Upon further inspection, it was apparent that it was a chronic problem, judging from the black residue of oil and possibly graphite on the associated parts.
A good cleaning of the black oil and a fresh coat on the compound lever, a drop on the finger slot, and a good retuning and setup reduced the amount of pitch rise to minimal, and the string returns to pitch within a half-second.
I may put the .014 back on to observe any change.
Conclusion: 1) sometimes the remedies are the illness. 2) a clean guitar is a happy guitar. 3) I can go back to playing.

Good for you Charlie... you'll find many steel guitar tuning/pitch/return problems are something similar to what you described... just a matter of cleaning, tweaking oiling, nudging, fondling, caressing,cajoling,.. nothing major... she just wanted to be played around with I imagine...bob |

Yes, I better watch out; next thing, she'll be wanting a lovely gift or a trip to Vegas.
Yes, many little discoveries about steels and women to be made, Bob. If they all resolve this well, it'll be heavenly. They do need a little attention, and don't like neglect.
I guess this can be moved to humor now.[This message was edited by Charlie McDonald on 03 September 2005 at 10:25 AM.] |

I hate to say "I told you (and everybody else) so".
Therefore, I won't.
Glad you got it fixed! |
