I tried searching several ways and couldn't find this, but I'm sure it's been posted here somewhere.

What is your cover band's setlist? Or what are the essential songs one must learn to play steel in a cover band?

Thanks

Following. I was just looking yesterday for lists in other (non-country) genres of good places to start to be able to sit in at jams and with cover bands.

Classic country or modern (radio-play) country?

"Country Cover Band" is a very broad category. Mo Pitney to Brantley Gilbert.

The little honky-tonk band I played with in Oct had a great list:
Thanks A Lot
I've Got Someone To Kill
Invitation To The Blues
Waiting For A Train
Who Stole That Train
City Lights
Next In Line
Downbound train
My House Of Memories
So Lonesome I Could Cry
Heartaches By The #
Sweet dreams
There Stands The Glass
Life To Go
A Way To Survive

And a lot of other classic stuff that was great. I'm hoping to get good enough to play with them again.

Thus demonstrating that speed picking is based upon economy of movement, not how fast you type.

The songs listed above are a nice reference point. The bands that I work with, while they use a set-list, they are not in concrete. Each band probably has a 200 + master list off to the side which is used to "change things up" during the gig.

You just never know when it's time for a 3/4 . OR NOT ! Laughing

I see that the OP is in Texas. Those of you that play in TX, do you mostly play 2 Steps and Waltz?

That's right Tony. The guys I played with don't ever rehearse, they just all know the songs and gather from different parts of the state to do gigs. They may talk on the phone before to talk about a general idea of what they may be playing.

I've played steel in Texas tonks all my life and if you can't do anything else you can work all you want just doing 4/4 shuffles. Any shuffle but make sure you have a bass player and drummer that can drive a shuffle up their kazoo. They always attract dancers and liquor sales go up which makes the club owner happy. The latest charted songs bomb in a Texas Tonk. They sometimes bomb for the artist that just recorded it. Takes a long time before a recording is dear to the hearts of the listeners but like fine wine good music keeps getting better with age.
