thanks for sharing. Mike was a wonderful steel player. he was always about TONE
interesting too how he transferred a lot of C6 steel to the 8-string dobro. his 8-String Swing album features tunes like Almost To Tulsa, Redskin Rag and Red Top as played by Bud Charleton, who I believe gave Mike some steel lessons to get him started.
the Slidin' Smoke album is one of my favorites! Mike and Jeff both played some acoustic guitar on there as well. Johnny Gimble is fantastic as always. I'm a big fan of Mike's vocals too
I wasn't familiar with the Jim Queen album at all. great stuff! apparently it's Danny on lead guitar, Bill Emerson on banjo

You're welcome GLG. I learned about the stuff from someone else as well. That's what keeps us going.
As to MA, thanks for the links. I've been a fan for years...on all instruments.
One of my friends, Glenn Lawson, was a member of the acoustic band Spectrum where Mike played resonator on a song or two from the 1982 LP. That might be my first exposure to him. Besides his immaculate execution, his use of harmonics always caught my ear. |

its all Howard's fault...but back to the topic at hand. Buddy Charleton did indeed give Mike some pedal steel guidance. His first lesson, Buddy introduced Mike to a pedal steel tone bar, his dobro bar would not work. Mike attended many garage steel jams, of which, invitations were extended to Howard numerous times. Howard always declined...bad Howard...we had SO much fun. Anyway, Mike would bring his dobro too and it was obvious how pedal steel influenced his dobro language. We knew it, Mike knew it, we all knew...Mike would finish his turn soloing, and turn around to wink at me. A simple acknowledgment of, take that buster....way too funny...

Mike was my earliest steel guitar influence when I heard him at age 17, before I even knew what a Dobro was. I just knew the sound grabbed me. I was fascinated and confused by the photo of the instrument on the LP cover. Why are the strings so high?
And even today, with so many Dobro players recording exceptional music, there's still something about Mike's playing that draws me in like no other player.
His first album,"Mike Auldridge, Dobro," remains unsurpassed in the way it presented the instrument in a band context. All the solos are exceptional as is the way the Dobro sat in the mix with the other instruments.
About 12 or 13 years ago, I created and sold a series of steel guitar masters posters and Mike bought copies of all of them. I was honored and touched at the karma of that moment.

Mike stories..Got a million of em'.
His work on steel goes back to the mid 70's. Listen to those "Scene" albums and you can usually hear a track or two with steel.
Mike "pushed" me to take up steel after I had been playing dobro for 20+ years saying that "It's more fun than sex the first year of marriage". My wife was present, looked at me and said "well, you should go do it then".
Mike's basement is a holy place. Taking lessons from him was like learning rock from Elvis. Hundreds of folks from all over the world would come to Maryland and spend time in the basement.
Happily, I have lunch with Mike's wife once or twice a month. I sometimes go down to Mike's old "office" just so I can sit in his chair and think about him.

| Yes, Mike did start on dobro (influenced by our uncle Elsworth) I got interested in steel guitar myself, but didn't know how to play at all. I showed it to Mike and we started teaching each other. We went to Jeff Newman seminars together. At the same time Pete Finney, and Tommy Hannum were going to those. It was really fun spending time with Mike in those days. Not a week goes by where I don't miss Mike. Clearly we all loved the guy. Never missed a show when he and the Scene or Chesapeake were in the New England area. How is Elise doing since losing Mike, Howard?
