This probably a dumb question.......but.....here goes. Why does the harmonic note on the 5th fret, sound exactly the same and the harmonic note at the 24th fret?

Because they are both 1/4 of the string length so both activate the same harmonic in the string.

Hey thanks guys. I asked 2 guys at work that play guitar and they didn't know. I told them I will post it on the forum........by the time I got home I had all these answers and one came all the way from Viet Nam! Again, thank you for answering my question.

Glad to help a little. Looks like I beat David Brown's answer by just seconds! 
You'll find just about any question about steel guitars can be answered by one or many people here on the forum.
