Forget that pristine '52 Fender, that near-mint EH-150; here are some re-purposed objects made into steel guitars that you may find alternative objects of desire (toolbox tricone and violin case lap steel by Black Tuesday Guitars) ...

Yes, but that case has strings, too, and can be played as a baritone lap steel. That, in turn, fits inside a cello case with strings inside a double-bass case with strings... it's turtles all the way down. |
