Can anyone say if Ralph Mooney was playing a straight up C6 tuning? It sure sounded E9 to me when he was on the C6 neck. I'm trying to really understand what he was playing. What a sound.

Ralph's rear neck was (his own variant of) E9 .

To me there are two factors that make the Mooney E9 tuning unique...

1) He opted for extra low strings rather than the high "chromatic" strings (F# & D#).

2) His pedals only moved one string each, which required some 'two-footing'.



So, with modern steel guitar technology, I wouldn't think it would be wise to attempt his pedal setup since most of his changes are already available with the standard E9 pulls... BUT, if I ever have the time I think it may be worth exploring the 'low note replacing chromatics' concept. This is much like Curly's C6 tuning... where he had no D or G on top, but started with the E and added a low A string on the bottom end.
