Good interview with Bruce Bouton. He talks about how he got the gig with Ricky Skaggs and describes the music scene at that time. Also, talks about doing sessions and the advice Loyd Green and Paul Franklin gave him.

Bruce and his performance with Ricky propelled me into an interest in the pedal steel guitar.

I told Bruce this while at Lloyds House while in Nashville last year. His response was synonymous of the professional that he is; humble.

Bruce is a phenomenal player and a humble gentleman, too.

I saw them at a small club in Memphis in the 80's I think, and stayed for both shows. It was one of the best small venue concerts I ever attended, and I remember Ricky saying we are not going to play any bluegrass. I think this may have been the Sweet Temptation tour.

Bruce was a big inspiration to me during that Skaggs period, , I'm sure to many of us, and he still is !

I was able to see the Skaggs line-up with Bruce and Ray a few times. I'm sure glad he took the gig with Ricky, probably not as glad as he is !

Those early Skaggs recordings are timeless , Bruce's playing on those cuts is spot on, iconic.

I had a friend tell me he always thought the break Bruce played on Highway 40 Blues was the best break he had heard on steel. His fast stuff was very impressive for sure. No matter what he played it was clean and smooth.

Great to hear a pro talking relatively openly about the ups and downs of the business. Also, how much being in the right place at the right time matters and then being good enough to capitalize on those opportunities.

Thanks for posting this. Bruce has always been one of my steel "heroes." Clean picking and beautiful phrasing always.
