Just picked up the new T-8 Clinesmith Console from Todd today.
Words can't describe the fine tone and construction or my happy soul today.
These first two are of me and my maker! 
Todd also played it for a while and was great to listen to him.
Got back and had to put on my best shirt to fit the feeling of the day;
Can't go wrong with one of these!

Thanks all for the nice comments, But sleep time here as I just arrived back home in Saigon after a 28 hour trip to get here.
The steel in the case weighs 75 pounds so spendy to bring back. but I expected that so was well prepared.
Will answer some of those messages when next I wake up rested.
Can't hardly wait to plug it into my little Danelectro amp and play, but my eyes are saying a great big NO!

Slept a little now.
For anyone interested I wanted to get the most from the three tunings so picked A6th for the back neck. E13th for the center neck and something a little like Speedy's F#9th for the front neck.
My thinking is this;
A6th, easy to change to C6th with the E on top and F at the bottom. Also with just three string changes I have B11th.
The E13th is quite new to me so still learning. It is also easy to change to E6th with the high G# for the Don Helms kind of stuff.
Needed something very different for the front neck. Fooled around with some bass tunings but they were not what I was looking for.
Todd suggested the "Speedy" F#9th with the high Eb & F# in the 7th & 8th position. That made for a tuning with just two wound strings. Just couldn't get used to those 7th & 8th strings in that position and also having no 5th tone, C# between the Bb & E.... So I added that C#, 5th scale tone between those 3rd and 6th tones.
Also dumped the other thin wire string in the bottom and replaced it with a #0.070 string also tuned to C# for a low low bass note. This is cool because it allows bass runs for Rock-a-Billy, Blues and whatever.
The tuning now looks like this top down; E C# G# E C# Bb F# C# Good for lots of neat stuff including the Hawaiian C# Minor tuning on the 5 top strings*.
Also easy to change quickly to a very basic E7th Blues tuning or Amaj9th also.
*Only know 2 Hawaiian tunes so that needs to be changed, I should have at least few more.
Yes I think I bit off way more than I can chew!   I'll need to learn a lot of new stuff to justify this beautiful instrument.
Anyway, here is what all that looks like. Any comments or suggestions from other players welcome for sure;

Not sure about the gauges.Todd is going to e-mail me a list so I'll know then what he put on it.
Just busted the high G# on my E13th neck while tuning it up. Replaced it with an 0.011 and it seems fine.
This being my first 24.5" scale other than my old cable Wright. That one takes a standard E9th set and no breakage issues even using the pedals.
All the other non-pedal steels I've had were 22.5" or 22.75" so my best guess is to go just a tad thinner for the extra length.
One very cool thing is the swing out ashtray. Quit smoking the evil stuff 14 years ago, but the picks and my 7/8" X 3" bar fit in there perfect. No more bar dings unless I drop it. Think I'll refrain from bar slams because I just never did figure out how to keep from dropping the bar, crash boom bang sounds lousy and dents the wood too.

Well this is enough to get a guy p****d off!
Got it back to Saigon to find that those morons that they hire and don’t train at TSA dented the maple behind the back neck.
Looks like it happened when they slid it across the edge of the case. Man oh man I hate those suckers.
One good thing is it didn’t remove the finish so that varnish must be very tough stuff after all.
That aside, I got it set up last night and plugged it in. Sounds wonderful.
The picks and my 7/8†X 3†bar fit in the ash tray and slide under the steel nicely.
I thought from what people on the forum had said that doing slants on the longer scale was difficult, but really I hardly notice it at all.
Also this; We usually give a steel a girls name, but being finished on the 15th of March, (Number stamped on the steel: 31518) Thats The Ides Of March, so "Little Caesar" seems like a fitting name for the steel... Hell, he even got almost assassinated by those TSA morons.

GADES...what a bummer!!!
If the finish is nitro-cellulous lacquer it my be possible to repair the scratch. If its a poly finish, not so much.
There are a number of articles dealing with repairing nitro finishes. The Forum has some and the regular guitar sites have a number suggestions/methods. |
