I use George-Ls stainless strings.
Yesterday I put a new set on my Bud & noticed a small 1/8" spot on the plain 4th string,,it actually looks like the string has lost some the stainless look,,kinda dark, almost like rust, but its not actually rust, just a dark spot?
The string sounds good as the rest, no problems.
Anyone ever run across this?

Hi Richard....yeah, no big deal. This happened recently with a 6th string .020 in a new set that I put on.

If I had a choice, I'd rather not have the blemish, but I have not noticed any problem with this string.

It may be a tarnished spot in the metal, I don't pretend to know, but it happens sometimes.

No harm, no foul. Unless the string zings or has a tuning fluctuation, I don't worry about it.

Richard, the plain strings are not stainless steel. Only the windings on the wound strings are stainless. They CAN rust.

That won't happen with a Jagwire string...

I'm beginning to get the feeling that Ricky is a bit partial to Jagwires.

Temporarily out of stock. Either Ricky's been breaking a bunch of them, or everyone else bought out his version of them.

Also, anybody know why their website is down? I tried www.jagwirestrings.com like before and it doesn't like me. Says I'm forbidden.

Richard, I know exactly what you mean about the spots on the strings. Last year I ordered several sets of Fender Superbullets for my six string electric and every set had a lot of those dark areas on the unwound strings. They were unplayable without polishing them with steel wool before putting them on....my fingers would drag on the tarnished areas. I haven't encountered the problem with any of my pedal steel strings yet but it can't be great for your bar unless you've got a chrome plated bar which have a super hard surface. In my case, Fender or the dealer replaced the defective string sets.

Thanks fellas for the replys, at least Im not alone with the string problems.
Wonder if George-ls has an official Co Web Site, maybe they could give some answers?

Heck, they may even send me a couple dozen free sets NOT!
I dont really feel anything when the bar crosses the spot, then again ,its just a tiny little spot,,it just buggs me to see it on a new string.

Michael. Just as an FYI concerning Jagwire Strings and Ricky Davis.

In an effort to try to keep up with our dealers orders, we have shut down the Jagwire Strings web site for direct orders from us. All web orders should be placed with either Bobby Lee, or with one of our network of authorized dealers. Bobby Lee stocks just about everything we make. If he doesn't have it, he will get it for you.

Regarding Ricky Davis either breaking strings, or his sets are sold out, it is the definately the later. Several thousands of our Artist sets are shipped to our dealers from here every week, and a better than fair amount of those sets are the Ricky Davis sets. Ricky has a specific set that meets or exceeds most of his needs for his guitars, and apparently his particular sets appeal to many others as well. It's not unusual for our dealers to be sold out of ceartian Jagwire Strings sets. Inventory is kept by most of our dealers based on previous sales, and best guess prediction, but that is always subject to change.

Anyway, hope this answers your questions.

I've gotten some Cobra Coils with dark spots. Doesn't seem to affect the sound or durability, but they make for rough action with the bar until they wear off.

Thanks a bunch for the info, Danny. I know I've ordered from you personally on at least one occasion. I didn't know that y'all were only wholesaling and not selling direct to the public. I guess that's a positive problem...

My dry sense of humor has outdone me again. Of course, Ricky's not breaking a lot of strings, otherwise he wouldn't be putting his face on your string packages! Besides, he's got that 12 on the third string. It's a monster!

Thanks Danny for the Clarification pal.
Michael a .012p on a 24" scale is the same as a .011p or 11.5p on a 24 1/4"or1/2" scale> same tension. So when one thinks a .012p is a thicker string; than most likely they are thinking it in relation to their longer scale pedal steel; which it is. But My string guages are designed for the 24" scale pedal steel and are CERTAINLY NOT heavey gauge for that scale; when they would be on the heavier side for a longer scale than 24">sure.

So it wouldn't hurt to put a .012 for the third string on my Carter? It's looking like a 24" scale to me.

No, it won't to put an .012 on, but it sure will hurt when it breaks!
