Hi. Any recommendations for a good 8-string lap steel? Doesn’t have to be fancy or beautiful, but I’d like to get one that I can keep with no need to upgrade. I’d appreciate any suggestions you may have. Thanks. Al

| Another vote for Melbert lap steels. I have two 8 string Melberts, one curly maple and one cherry wood. They look and sound good and they are affordable. |

I just purchased an 8 string lap steel from Ryan Rukavina that was very reasonably priced and should last a lifetime. I called him up and told him what I wanted (scale length, bridge and nut material, pickup etc.) and he built it for me.

I have a few rooty-toot-toot pieces - Fouke Aluminum, MSA, a D-10 Pedalmaster NON-Pedal (yah I groove on the concept too  ) but them Melberts, man... a whole lot of people have one, they're warm, functional, unpretentious tools. Afflordable, and I've never heard a complaint. You could just drop him a line and see what he's got working. Sometimes you can fall into stuff on line here or Ebay or Reverb, but you need a modicum of background knowledge to avoid weirdness. |

I know it is a cheap import but I'm giving consideration to finally picking up the rondomusic / SX 8 string. Price is very reasonable and it looks well designed (relatively) as compared to some other designs (ie when you see adjustable bridges on a lapsteel).

They be a bit more expensive, but Fenders are made exceptionally well. It's like having a Tele or a Strat (only a TON less costly than one of those from the same time period and the same workshop(s).

I don't have either of his 6 or 8 string models but I've heard nothing but GOOD things about Melbert Steels.....so he must be doing something right.

Ryan Rukavina does great work but maybe look into a Nashville luthier named Clay Alden. Corner Music sometimes has his stuff but he can be reached direct too. He uses reclaimed wood a lot and winds his own pickups. Just got this baby from him and really dig it. $350.

I owned the 6-string ash for about a year and it was a solid player, I have also been looking at the 8 since the 10 did not pan out...... |

Ed I would be ashamed too pay that little for that beautiful lap every body likes too eat a good meal once in a while that’s a crying shame that Clay a true wood working artist wood even consider such a price. May be something I don’t no.I’ve been guilty of selling for so little at times that I lost money but I’ve learne my lesson. Johnie King just pulling your leg Ed congrats

 I can build about any style lap u desire but I need to eat at least one a day so that will reflect the price please support your local luthier. |
