Here's a request for Jerry Scoope and Dawn Phillips who were looking for the intro and some fills for Cal Smith's "The Lord Knows I'm Drinking". This should get you close. Not sure who played steel on the original recording. Corrections and comments always welcome. Here it is on youtube:

I enjoyed working on it Jerry and Dawn. My friend Alex Rehfeld who knows EVERYTHING pedal steel , asked Lloyd Green who played steel on this for me - Lloyd wrote back that it was John Hughey on this session. |

So apparently there are (at least) two different versions out there.
When I listened to the one in the OP, I thought I was losing my mind because the steel parts were not at all how I remembered them. But that's because I hadn't heard the "Original Decca Recording" before.
I only knew of this version: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JU_X3Ljz-U0
So...who plays steel on that one? |

I just did some research, Andy Seems Cal Smith signed with Pete Drake's First Generation Records label in 1984 and re-recorded all of his earlier hits. Pete was a producer as well as a steel player. Maybe Pete played steel on the re-recordings...
