What a perfect line-up for 1940s Hapa Haole music. Acoustic bass, vibraphone, archtop guitar, looks like a 1948 Epiphone Triumph, and I suppose a Clinesmith steel guitar. Great playing, great tone.

I am with you David, perfect line up, some ukulele strumming would not hurt though Smile
I like a lot Mikiya Matsuda's playing and I know he is very appreciated here so I didn't hesitate to post the videos after I found them.
I will visit California next summer, I really hope to catch the Alcatraz Islanders during my trip.

Diggin' the vibe's addition to the band.

The steel sounds great through the EH 150 .

Awesome guys!
We should stop complaining about how a steel is hard to carry around. The vibe player has to bring 48 tiny little cases...

Nice tunes Paolo.
The steel and vibes are such a great blend together.
Both have been favorite sounds of mine for a long time.

Lived in SF for many years but never heard of that place,
Been gone since 1992 so it may just be new since then.

Anyway your band sounds so good!
Will work my way through your videos a littler later today.
Best wishes,
Andy Very Happy

Wow! Vintage sound and approach and some lesser-heard tunes as well. Excellent. This sound and feel is the goal of many Hawaiian/Hapa Haole bands worldwide but few have achieved it so authentically.

Usually Danny plays Ukulele but was not there for that show. Vic is on bass on that video when normally Lee is on bass and Vic sometimes plays Ukulele as well and he's really good at it. The whole line up changes around fairly often but it always seems good to me.

Nick is playing an archtop and he normally uses a clip on Mic of some sort, I think.

I remember Mikiya facebook chat we had and he believes in Interval recognition - sound familiar - Buddy Emmons said the same thing.

Anyway I dig the sound and style - not the haircut. LOL.

Those clinesmith sound like a bygone era pickup indeed. Beautiful.

Best steel tone I've ever had in forty two years of playing steel.
Indeed my Clinesmith Aluminum Joaquin Murphy model has the best tone I've ever had in any steel I had. I've owned quite a few and some were very good sounding.

Glad to know I'll be back in Oregon in 2 weeks and pick up my new Clinesmith T-8. Been a long wait and expect it will be well worth it.

Todd said he is working on castings for his Fry Pan model due out later.
He also plans to produce a ten string version of the Aluminum Joaquin Murphy model like the one I have now. Think I'll get one of those too with a stand to hold them both for gigs where I won't want to take a bigger steel. Then I can have my 8 string A6th and a 10 string E13th, both with the same great tone.

I've said it before but here goes again. I can't go a day without playing the Clinesmith. Still as exciting as the day I bought it and it has improved my playing. I think the reason it's improved is that I just can't stop playing with it. Never had a steel do that to me before. You can't go wrong with any Clinesmith. Very Happy

Thanks for the kind words, folks. I’m not a natural band leader, but forming this group has been a rewarding kick in the butt for me. I get a chance to dig into the repertoire, improve my steel playing, and work with a great group of musicians, including Steve Walz (who neglected to mention that he plays with the band regularly).

And the best part of this particular performance was when my youngest daughter crawled on stage and sat on my lap for the end of “I’ll Weave a Lei of Stars for You”. As you can see from the clip, she’s better at connecting with the audience than me.

Oh, and one quick plug about the guitar…while the Clinesmith can capture a vintage sound (especially with the right amp), it’s not at all limited to being used for traditional music. Mike’s “Steelonious” project comes to mind as an obvious example. I never tire of exploring these older styles, but I’m itching to work on some non-period music with the guitar and will try and record some video/audio soon.

Hello Mikiya,
You guys sound wonderful together and great band name too.
Love the vibes and steel together.
Years ago my best friend played a set of vibes that I had in my shop so well that I gave them to him.
May be coincidence, but back then in the late 60's he lived on Chenery street about 4 blocks from where your playing.
Anyway, I'm your new fan and next time I'm coming to SF I'll try to time it to when your playing there. Very Happy
Best wishes,
Andy

ps. That was real cute when your daughter got into the act...
