I still want to build a pedal steel, but I decided I couldn't wait that long to start learning to play one, so I bought a Carter S10 8x5 all pull from member Larry Petree. FedEx had it scheduled to come yesterday but we had an ice storm, so it's on a truck now for delivery today.
This is going to be an entirely new journey in my musical life. I'm reasonably competent with C6 lap - not too stuck in pockets, can find the notes I need pretty much all over the neck - but I'm having a hard time comprehending how I'll learn the pedals. I'm probably going to go with some of Joe Wright's Skype lessons I think.
Anyway - exciting, for an old guy.

Congratulations! I too am starting my pedal steel journey today when the UPS truck arrives with my Justice S10 3x4! I have a fair amount of musical background, but no slide or finger pick experience, much less lap steel!
Just sitting around waiting for the signature required package to arrive, plenty of time to browse the forum!

Good for you Jeffery. You've already got a background in C6 so you're not starting totally from scratch.

It's got a C6 (or maybe A6, I can't remember now, X6 anyway) neck and an E9 neck. I play in a local band, so I had to have an X6 neck so I can make music without pedals from day 1.
I play mostly by scale position ("Let's see, I need a 2 note there,") rather than note name, so (anything) 6 is mostly all the same to me.
E9 is going to be a whole new ball game.

| I'd sign up for the Paul Franklin modern music masters course if you can swing the $$. I would consider myself and experienced player and I have learned a lot from that course. |

| As Jay mentioned, it would be a great idea to consider Paul's course. I have been playing for 35 years and I was happy with what I have learned. Cleared up a couple bad habits of mine. Very much worth the money. Would be great for a guy starting the journey. |
