Episode 11, featuring a great interview with Jon Graboff, is here! We talk about using pedal steel in a rock context, touring, lots about Lloyd Green, Jon's recent wrist injury and recovery, and of course, a little nerdy gear talk Happy to note that though Jon was still recovering when the interview was recorded, he's on the mend now and back to gigging. Enjoy!

Possibly best known for his work with Ryan Adams and the Cardinals, Jon Graboff has also recorded and/or toured with the likes of: Willie Nelson, Norah Jones, David Byrne, Carrie Underwood, Noel Gallagher, Harper Simon, Phil Lesh, M. Ward, Cyndi Lauper and others.

Noel Gallagher? Nice to see that cowboys conjur images of a pedal steel. Like Sting with "Love Is Stronger Than Justice" some twenty years ago. I will listen to the interview tomorrow. Thanks! _________________ Fender Kingman, Sierra Crown D-10, Evans Amplifier, Soup Cube. |

I remember about 10 years ago I went to see Oasis in concert because they were a favorite band of mine when I was really young. Ryan Adams and the Cardinals opened for them - with Jon Graboff on steel. They easily outshined Oasis for me, due in no small part to Jon I'm sure. This was before I even had the thought in my head of playing pedal steel.
Thanks for the podcasts, Bryan! |

Good interview. The information about Lloyd Green's playing around the 20:00 - 25:00 minute range was enlightening about how he used the 2nd string and slants. Around the 57:00 mark your discussion of playing steel in a rock context was also great - lay off the rolling A pedal and watch the vibrato. Thanks for doing these podcasts Bryan. |

Looking forward to listening to this. Haven't found the chance just yet.
I'm a fan of Jon's playing and musicality. This is a really nice acoustic reading of a great Adams song. Jon sweetens it hugely.

Several years ago now I was in a band that opened for Shooter Jennings. Jon was playing steel with him and I got the pleasure to talk with him for quite a while backstage. Great guy for sure...very knowledgeable and personable. I'm pretty sure he watched us play a Ryan Adams song where I was on steel. I never thought that would ever happen! _________________ https://www.facebook.com/ggefell/ |

A year ago I was channel surfing (which doesn't take long since I don't have cable) and I came upon Cyndi Lauper on Austin City limits. I saw a steel guitar on stage so I decided to watch the show. It was Jon on steel and he fit in very nicely. Here is a link to Cyndi singing "The end of the world" with Jon on steel.

One thing I did not realize until after I was watching the show for awhile was what a great singer and performer Cyndi is. |
