Almost certainly Curly Eyles, who was known to be on Dick's records in the mid to late 1950s, along with Lenny Breau on standard guitar.
Compare a still frame from the video to 2 pix of Curly in 1957. Curly second from left; Curless 4th from left.
Here's Roy Aldridge, Lenny, and Curly from over 60 years ago. I can only wish I could go downtown and hear this sound tonight. No chance. Not on the radio either.

Here's 3 better pix of Dick and his band "The Wagon Masters", circa 1956-58.
All with Curly Eyles on steel. Gotta be the same guy in the Youtube video.
The last one is with Lenny Breau and Betty Cody, a few years later.

I bought my first guitar, a 69PP that I still own, from Al "Curley" Eyles at Fitchburg Music around 1972. He would sit at a steel in the store and just blow your mind with his playing. Begged him for lessons, but he always said "no, I don't play anymore...". He turned me on to Tommy Case for lessons, and I owe him for getting me going... _________________ John Macy

A bit of trivia for those that may be unaware. The Betty Cody that is in the last picture is actually Rita Cote, Lenny Breau's Mom.She was a singer from Sherbrooke Quebec. She married Harold Breau, a musician who performed as Hal Lone Pine.
Lenny was an awesome jazz player. Made albums with Chet Atkins, Buddy Emmons and several of his own. Lenny left us way too early. One of the finest pickers I have ever heard. |
