I don't know much about speakers and I've got a BW 15" out of my '83 Session 500. The paper is ripped pretty bad and headed for the dump. I removed the magnet off the back but am not sure what all I should keep. Is the "basket" the metal and the paper? Should I keep any of that or just the magnet. I'll probably just send what is usable to anyone who wants to pay for shipping. Don't want to toss something that someone could use. I cut the cabinet down and it's a pretty cool 500 with no speaker and a lot lighter.

Scott, you can purchase another basket, and just bolt your magnet on it.

Thanks Bill. Maybe I'll make a light cab and do that. It did sound great with the 500.

There are some things you need to be aware of concerning basket replacement.

You say it's a Session 500 from '83. If your speaker is original to the amp, it may be the original Spider Web model. Modern baskets won't usually work on that magnet due to differences in the coil gap and baskets from the Spider Web era are nearly impossible to find.

Spider Web below:

Secondly, the Session may have had a 1502-4 speaker with the aluminum dome. Later models have a paper dome.

Early 1502-4 speaker below:

There are different eras of speakers and magnets. Generally speaking, components from the original black flat magnet Spider Web models won't interchange with the later Super Structure and on components.

Your ripped cone is probably no use to anyone except as a template. Magnets don't go bad, so it can still be used with the correct era[s] of baskets.

If your magnet is one of the later silver and super structure units, current 1501-4 SB would be Peavey's recommended basket for steel guitar.

Thanks Jerry. Mine is the newer magnet (not Spider Web) but I guess older speaker with the ribbed outer edge and aluminium dome.

Sounds like yours is the original 1502-4 SB low frequency model that Peavey used in the early 80's steel amps.

The later 1502 is a Deep Throw basket with the paper cap. Hard to find the original basket, but there are probably some of the later DT paper cap baskets available. Either one will work with your magnet, but the 1501-4 smooth, un-ribbed model might be a better choice for steel guitar and maybe a little easier to find. I believe that's the one Peavey is using in their new 115 Session amps.

1501-4 SB smooth basket below:

1502-4 DT long ribbed basket below:
