Did I just miss this guy, or is he a somewhat obscure and unsung hero?

Despite the accordion, its a pretty nice piece of Hawaiian steel.

He has been discussed quite a bit on these forums in years past.

He made I think 3 LPs for Decca in the 1950s. One of them mostly Hawaiian as I recall. The others pop and novelty stuff.

Died in Reno I think--20 or so years ago? I think he was from the east coast, but presumably settled in Reno because he played the hotels there a lot in the 50s and into the 60s. The live act was standard lounge affair of the time, with on-stage carrying on and banter.

Lots of stuff I like--mostly on an Epiphone I guess.

El Rancho Grande, How D'ya Do, Mapuana, Third Man Theme, Misirlou, etc, etc.

There is a video clip somewhere on Youtube. From the Patti Page Show in 1956, if memory serves. He roars through "Hawaiian War Chant"----the guy had fast hands.

Yeah, a hero, to me at least.

Very Happy Even with the accordion,- he has really nice fill-ins. I have a couple of his LPs. It's a good LP.
My 1500+ Hawaiian, Polynesian, Southseas LPs are for sale,- including Joe Maize.

So that big Epi console has the amp and speaker built into it? Wouldn't want to be hauling it around much.

I did a live film score gig in an old art deco theater a couple years back - that would have been a perfect match for the decor.

Thanks for the replies. What a great player, with a touch of Spike Jones. I just ordered the CD.
