Here's my problem,
I have Grover keys on my current guitar.
Two click when I turn them and some seem to drag or bind up. Their not smooth like they should be. these are on a 2004 steel guitar.
Are there better keys out there or has the Quality of Grover slipped. The shafts have slack in them, not tight. it's almost like there's bushings missing or somthing.
Should I change them to another kind?
Thanks for your help , Jerry. |

If this is a 2004 guitar I'd be talking to the manufacturer. It's hard to see how you could abuse tuners, so they ought to still be under warranty.
Grover tuners used to be pretty good back in the '70s. I haven't heard much from them lately.
Tuners are one of my pet peeves. Why make a good guitar and put crappy tuners on it? I dunno.
If the warranty thing doesn't work then I recommend the Schaller M6 or mini M6. Look at their website HERE. Some of their tuners are direct Grover replacements. Good German engineering throughout. Nickel, black, gold, and about $50.00 for a set of six, but cheaper in quantity. Check Stew Mac for prices. Stew Mac has design drawings on their tuner pages.

Jerry,
Have you taken them off and really inspected them.
I usuall find problems with tuners is due to
poor assembly. Lose screws ect.May be easy to
fix the ones you have. Of cource pulling them on a new guitar urks ya, but s __ t
happens

Well there's about 10 different kind of Grover Tuners; so depends on which ones you have. I like the new 18:1 Romatic Grover tuners as they are the finest touch; no slip; no drag; exact tuner that is new; that I've laid me hands on....but wheather they fit on your particular steel that's another reason there are so many different tuner styles made from each company.
Oh and Hi Jerry; long time no see pal.

You're reading something wrong. I'm looking at the Stewmac catalog and Grover Rotomatics 18:1 auto-locking tuners are $42.65 for a set of 6...not EACH. |

I usually order from Stewart MacDonald - www.stewmac.com
They have a great catalog if you're into building/repairs. Once you order from them you'll start getting it for free.
Edited to add - but I agree with the above post. On a 2004 guitar those should NOT be slipping. I'd contact your guitar manufacturer - they should be able to get replacements from Grover. They SHOULD last 15-20 years.[This message was edited by Jim Sliff on 13 July 2005 at 09:17 PM.] |

Hey Jerry; I haven't actually obtained any for myself; these were for Sho-bud's that I've worked on and the owners buy them and have them sent here as part of my task.
They have bought them from Al Brisco and I believe Duane Marrs has them also...

As a matter of fact I don't like the tuners on my 93 Legrand. Seems like the head stock is too thick for the inside nut that holds the tuner to get a good grip before it strips the threads. I've tried putting teflon tape around the threads to take up some of the slop but it doesn't work very well. I have about 3 like that. One of these days I'm going to have to replace them. Sounds like Steward-Mac is a good place to look. I just wonder how I would make sure the inside nut is long enough before I buy a set. W Franco - There have been several complaints over the years about Emmons and Grover tuners. I had the same problem with my Mullen. I ended up removing the washers and just tightening the nut down directly to the keyhead.
