Don't know how it will sound. It's 1" thick. Shooting for a compact lightweight Lap steel. Not quite done, but hopefully will be stringing it up early next year!

What kind of wood is that Bill?
I like the marriage of wood and aluminum (or is it steel?)
Headstock looks really cool.
Nice job. _________________ Four Pettingills and a Clinesmith Aluminum. Fender Blues Junior. Quilter Mini-101. |

The wood is walnut and maple. I used a 1/2" piece of aluminum for the "Spine" It is a solid piece of aluminum with areas lightened up to save on the weight. Thanks guys, I appreciate your positive comments. _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

Wow! The family keeps growing. Each Gronertone lap steel you build is unique and beautiful. No fret markers? Or will they come later? |

Pretty, and very unique!
What kind of pickup is that? Like a normal fender single coil, just with a custom cover? |

I made a custom cover for the strat single coil. Then I made matching knobs. I had to laminate 3 pieces of 1/4" acrylic to get enough height to machine the 3 pieces. Bill, family isn't growing, I still have 4 Gronertones...........I sold one 2 weeks ago. Santa needed some $$$$ Frets and markers will come later. _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

Very nice, Bill. I like the "lightweight" part. My only criticism is the placement of the volume & tone controls. I think they're too far from the player's right hand. I'm thinking they should be on the other side of the pickup, for more convenient use when playing. Just my humble opinion! All in all a nice looking, compact, lightweight lap steel. |
Trust me Doug, the way I play they could be anywhere on it and it would be OK..... _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |

I have seen photos of several of Bill's builds and played and inspected one of them in hand and I must say the designs are very tastefully done even the color pallettes, and the execution is near to perfection as I have ever seen, He builds "surgical grade" musical instruments.

I may not be stringing it up early in the New Year. A friend of mine (with a ton of experience) has convinced me into getting a P90 pickup. He played my other lap steel made totally from aluminum and commented he thought it would benefit from a more mellow pickup than the single coil strat I had in. He thought it was a bit too bright. I am not that far into the build that I can't accommodate a P90, so I think I will go with his suggestion. Stay tuned. Maybe if it sounds good he can make a recording and we can post it.....cuz I can't play to save my life! _________________ Currently own, 6 Groner-tone lap steels, one 1953 Alamo Lap steel, Roland Cube, Fender Champion 40 |
