on the Derby (the imfamous green one) i just got, i noitced the left knee levers are too far right of the floor ABC pedals for me to comfortly use, especially when (as i do anyway) rock my left foot off onto the A to release the B to get a minor for exapmle. the angle of my left leg becomes very sharpe back to the left. if i pick UP my left foot of course i can do it, BUT i takes away any 'slurring' into the minor i may want to do.
i know my last steel, a ZUMM was not like this nor was the Emmons Legrande or the Sierra or the 2 Mavericks i have owned. All were DB E9 except Mavericks of course.
just me or others have this issue? with Derby's or maybe this one was built special with diff spacing?
best way to correct?
appears to be a major set up change???
thanks,
Billy

Take em off and move em over - that's what I'd do. Anytime I get a new steel I do stuff like that. No steel is ever gonna come set up to your particular body geometry - you gotta tweak that yourself. If you're lucky it's just angles and throws. If that won't do it,you'll have to move some cross shafts and such - still just an afternoon's work. -MJ- |

yea, i'm got it belly up now!
my Derby does not offer any lateral adjustments on the ABC pedals (that I can see anyway), only one hole under the carriage.
if i drop the B pedal more, it helps some of course, but you are losing a good bit of the B poedal travel!
does anyone know who amy have a diff LKL lever that may be offset to the left more?
also, who my have a longer drop arm for teh LKV B lever?
i guess i have fat legs???
thanks,
Billy

Billy T., not the pedals, the KL's...move the KL. The pedals are fixed. Before you start drilling, make sure it's where you want it. You'll probably need someone to assist you. Or, if you have a good feel for the travel, you can do it alone. Be sure to do a starter hole before you screw into that maple slab. It may cause a crack in the maple, now, or later. |

i am not going to move anything yet. i was hoping i could offset the levers, etc. to correct the ckearance angle.
teh proper parts would fix this i think.
i assume others have this same problem???
thanks,

Billy,
Are you sitting dead centre to the steel when you are playing it?
If so, then stop.
Position yourself as near to the changer end as possible, and you may find that everything drops into place. |

i do sit slightly to the charger with my belly b. about on the octave.
are Derby's ABC slewed alittle more to the left? it sure seems so.
with short, slightly fat upper legs it presents a problem at least for me.
i have the LKL tilted as far to the left as i can go and the B pedal about as low as i can go and still have some travel and its still hard for me to reach the 6m (release B pedal) WITHOUT slightly engaging the E4 (LKL). with shinny upper legs and very flexiable ankles it would be OK.
the other thing i am trying to adjust is dropping the LKV about 1/2" to 1" so i can get full upward travel with my left knee and reach pitch (Bb).
i wonder how many out there have seen this on the Derby's with their leg size and weight? i never this issue before (on my ZUMM, Emmons or Sierra) but i'm no PSG pro, full time traveling player either. if i lose about 75 pounds and wear tights i'll be oK. these damm baggy shorts don't help either!
i'll get it right.
thanks for all the help.
later,
Billy

Richard is right!
I'm sitting with my bellybutton aligned with the 17'th fret, which is quite far towards the changer end.
Works for me.

i have called and talked with Charlie and i am going to call back.
his firt comments were to do everything we have discussed. Charlie wondered if it was modified by someone. it looks like new, un-changed.
there is alittle lateral movement on the LKR cross-crank (front to rear) and left to right on the LKR rod hanger at pedal end. not much but not as tight as the others. i feel its OK though.
what i see is that is not many adjustments in terms of fitting knee levers to one's legs, etc. example the LKV is fixed interms of adjusting the height or angle.
the space between knee levers is close and if you nhave a bigger knee its very tight and maybe not easily adjusted.
now if it fits right, it makes for a very smooth, snug and fast pedal play i would think. the steel maintains tune after pedal movement great also. sounds really big and solid. i really like the Derby steel, i just need to get the left knee pedals to fit my left leg and knee. as i said, i am sitting with my belly button about on the octave near the changer, the B pedal is as low as i can get it and still have some travel, the left knees are as wide as i get them and still play good. i can release the B pedal get the 6m but bi nhave to be very careful not to engage the E4 with the LKL.
i am going to call Charlie again today. how far is Derby above Nashville? about 2 hours? i guess he would have or can make what parts i may need. if hes not too busy i may drive up after the 4th.
thanks,
Billy
