I have gone to outboard effects. Looking for ideas on cable length from the volume pedal to the effects unit and from the effects unit to the amp. Don't want to cut them to short nor to long. An elementary question for sure. |

There is no magic length. Its not like RF (Radio Frequency) cables where there are standing waves, etc.
Make them for what you want or are comfortable with. Only restriction is 20 ft seems like max for an audio cable before potentially there can be some frequency roll off.
Eddie Fulawka made cables in certain lengths (I think 3ft increments) but as noted its only important for RF cables. |

If your amp features a 'Post Gain' effects loop, best to run a 3' cable from guitar to volume pedal and whatever length is required to reach the amp. Running the effects through the loop helps to maintain a cleaner signal path and also allows the use of a foot switch to turn them on and off. Also, one great feature of 'George L' cables is that making longer or shorter cables is a fairly simple procedure. I keep sections cut to several lengths on hand and make up cables to suit whatever requirements I need for a particular job, only takes minutes to swap the jacks. |

Use the shortest cable you can get away with. A good supply of 10' and 3', maybe a couple 15' for deep stages. As David implies, you could do a lot worse than making your own George L's.
There are considerations for placing a volume pedal in front of your effects. Some great info on fx loops and signal chain here:

If you use a buffer, not a true bypass pedal, you can run longer cables from the output of that pedal to the amp. A Boss DD-3 type pedals like that are buffered. |
