Topic: How does polishing underneath affect a guitars tone ? |

I've noticed that some guitars have their parts Knee Levers etc all buffed and sparkling,Does this have anything to do with tone improvement or not ...my knees can't tell the difference?

I'm guessing doing a slalom course around those levers impedes the escape of frequencies transmitted from the bottom of the guitar. Polishing them may be an effort towards more aerodynamic efficiency allowing those frequencies an easier escape from their origin.
Based on my experience of designing aerodynamic bicycle rims...smooth doesn't always provide the most slippery surface. The dimpling on golf balls for better aerodynamics comes to mind.
Damnit Stu, now I'm gonna hafta dimple all those under the skirt bits on these rigs I'm building. I need more steps in the process like I need a pencil stuck in my eye. Thanks a lot Stu! |

Pedal steels cost enough - they might as well look good. A maker who takes trouble with the finish is more likely to have taken trouble with the mechanics too.

| Not sure whether polishing or not polishing makes any substantial difference. But on push-pulls, the ones with red flocking underneath definitely sound superior to those with black flocking. |
