Looking to replace the black widow with a neo speaker and cut some weight. I tried a Eminence EPS 15C neo but found the new surrounding foam was too thick and I could not screw the speaker in to the baffle, screws were Ok for the BW but too short for the EPS 15C.

The BW measures 3/8" with the foam and the EPS 3/4"

Any suggestions?

I have one in my LTD but I had to cut the foam padding out around the screw hole on the speaker with the nut goes...

Cutting the edge foam would do the trick but rather not start cutting on a new speaker. Screws that secure the speaker are under the grill cloth so looks like no easy fix.

You can remove the grill and replace the current screws with longer ones that will accommodate the extra width.

Gary, I think the speaker grill just pops off. It is held in place by velco strips. A one inch or so putty knife should do the trick. Just be easy and gently put pressure on knife. You will see it start to lift up. J.R. Rose

This is what I used, carried at Lowes. Made a tool out of round stock to install, but can be installed with Needle Nose Pliers if care is used.

Thanks for everyone's responses. It's easy enough to unscrew the baffle from the amp but the screw heads are under the actual front grill cloth and there is no way that I can see to access them aside from removing the cloth and replacing it.
The easiest way I guess would be to find a Neo speaker where the edge and foam does not exceed 3/8". The EPS would have been nice but I did not want to start cutting foam on a new speaker.

Mike, I have 3 nv 400 cabinets and they pry off like you say, but I also have 2 ltd 400 cabinets, and they do not come off period. If anyone has an Ltd 400 that preys off I would really like to see it....thanks jack

The LTD 400 does not pry off. The baffle is screwed to the cabinet. The grille cloth has to be removed to access the speaker screws. It really is not that hard a job to take out the baffle, pry off the aluminum trim and remove staples on three sides, replace with longer screws and staple the grille cloth back.

My LTD has threaded inserts, and the grill cloth does not have to come off to change speakers.

Gary, to remove your speaker do you remove screws or nuts? Really the question is can you replace the speaker mounting screws with longer ones without removing the grille cloth? His screws are too short to put the thicker speaker in and he needs a solution.

OK guys, looks like I was wrong on the velco strips on my LTD. I guess I was thinking about a Nashville 400 I used to have. J.R. Rose

I apologize Jerry, mine does have the bolts coming through from the front with nuts holding the speaker down.
